If you enjoy multiplayer team-based shooters without having to pay any kind of entry price to play, keep your eyes peeled for Firefall, coming in late 2011 for the PC. Firefall is being developed by Red 5 Studios, a seasoned group of game designers who previously worked on World of Warcraft and Tribes.
The third-person shooter has a graphic treatment similar to that of a cell-shaded game like Borderlands. One of the unique things about Firefall is the combat enhancement abilities that come from using “battleframes,” an upgradable mech suit of sorts. This is surely where some of the revenue for Firefall will come into play, with the optional battleframe enhancements.
Here’s a bit on the storyline of Firefall, from Red 5 Studios:
“Firefall paints a beautifully devastating vision of Earth, 200 years in the future. The promise of a new clean energy source, Crystite, leads to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, a hostile energy storm that engulfs most of our home planet. Earth’s surviving humans must band together in the eye of the Melding storm to save our species. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges as a bloodthirsty race known as The Chosen threatens humanity’s survival.”
You can now apply for participation in a beta test of Firefall at www.firefallthegame.com.

The next Mega Man game, Mega Man Universe, will include more challenging side-scrolling action from Mega Man (aka Rockman, in other regions of the world). Capcom released a new trailer for their upcoming PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Mega Man Universe downloadable game, with Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune introducing the first bits of gameplay and a few of the characters.
Continuing in Capcom’s crossover style, expect other Capcom characters to be playable in Mega Man Universe. This includes Street Fighter‘s Ryu and, if the previously released teaser trailer is to be believed, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts‘ Sir Arthur. Perhaps even more surprising, you can also play as Bad Box Art Mega Man for the first time! Yes, that infamous NES cover art finally is accurately represented in the game. Capcom will have more to unveil soon but for now, watch the first Mega Man Universe gameplay trailer below with Inafune-san!
