The PS3 and Wii have been officially released (and sold out) across the US after quite a dramatic week of long lines and eBay scalpers. If you haven't managed to get a PS3 or Wii on launch day, here’s Rivithed’s first day impressions.
I’ll give you an overview on some of the features, the positives and negatives of each. We’ll take the Xbox 360 along for the ride, being that this is near it's one year anniverssary (and up against these new next-gen consoles). The gaming landscape will likely be shifting over the next few months. Who will be on top? It’s up to how the gamers play and how the console manufacturers listen to gaming communities. Here’s to the first step into a new era of gaming. Continue onward to read the impressions!
PS: We welcome any comments and opinions from gamers, so post yours below (on the last page).

It's been quite a gaming weekend! We've managed to get our very itchy gaming fingers on two Wiis and a PS3 here at Gaming Bits, thanks to a non-chaotic pre-order from GameStop (congrats to GameStop for doing much better this time since the Xbox 360 launch!) and some luck at a Toys "R" Us store. Rivithed will be posting first day impressions on both the Wii and PS3 later today, in comparison to the Xbox 360 as well. OneOrbit shares his experience in tracking down a Wii and first Wii Sports impressions below!
OneOrbit Landing a Wii:
I took off Sunday morning at 8:30 am not really "looking" for a Wii but wondering how long the lines were. First I drove by Best Buy and the lines were long, too long. So I went to Target and there they had already passed out tickets to get a Wii and they were all out. So I proceeded to GameStop in the same mall and of course all systems were spoken for. Next stop, Einstein Bagels and keep in mind I'm toting my 4-year-old daughter as well. We get a bagel and I enjoy a hot coffee. Before we head home I swing back by Best Buy and the lines are gone along with anything Nintendo.
I promised my daughter I'd stop at Toys "R" Us and I thought in the back of my mind, maybe the Wii is there? Sure enough a line has formed only about ten deep. Hmmm. When do they open? 11am. Only an hour an a half to wait but I have my daughter with me. Thinking there is no way she is going to behave for an hour, I almost turned around but she freaked out and said I promised her I would take her. Perfect. I scored!

If you are hunting down a PS3, you may want to employ the "Playstation Finder" to help you track one down. Playstation Finder is a tool that claims to be "the fastest purpose-built Playstation 3 stock locator on the internet." Pay a one time $6.50 fee (through Paypal.com) and you will be notified when an online retailer has PS3s in stock. Retailers they mention being on their radars include Best Buy, Circuit City, EB Games/GameStop, Amazon.com and other "usual suspects."
From Playstationfinder.com: "Our systems, spread across the globe, frequently check the stock status of Playstation 3 units and bundles at both U.S. and Canada-based online stores. The moment a unit or bundle switches from 'Out of stock' to 'in stock', we know within seconds, and our system generates email alerts to all of our subscribers, which are sent out with extreme speed, as our system processes between 500-1000 alerts per second. You will receive an email with a link -directly- to the item in the online store."
Read more on the Playstation Finder here. Let us know if this works out for you!
If you want to try another option, check out ps3preorders.com, although you are likely to see most listings that are "available" are on ebay.com and overstock.com. Both of those are auction sites with PS3 price gouging.

If you haven't picked up a Wii console by now, it's likely that the odds of finding the new Nintendo console are going to pretty tough. The Associated Press is reporting that many stores have sold out.
From the AP report: "Nintendo's entry into the game console wars, the Wii (wee), went on sale today. It quickly sold out in many stores despite stocks that far surpassed those of the rival Sony PlayStation 3, which went on sale two days earlier."
We'll keep you up to date on when the next shipments will be hitting retailers and/or online shops.
UPDATE: Give NintendoWiipreorders.com a try in your search for a Wii. Keep in mind that auction sites (eBay and Overstock) are typically listed as "available," but the price is likely to be much higher than retail. Look for retailers being tracked on NintendoWiipreorders.com.

The much anticipated Wii console has finally been released today. The Toys "R" Us in Times Square and GameStop stores were among the first retailers to sell the Wii console starting at 12:01 am today, Sunday November 19th.
Nintendo held special events at GameStop at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles and at the Toys "R" Us in Times Square, New York City. Reggie Fils-Aime was the first to sell the Wii console at the Times Square location.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is receiving high ratings (see here on gamerankings.com), hitting several perfect 10's and averaging about a 97% rankings ratio.

Gamers looking to get a hold of a PS3 may not need to wait longer than next week. According to an article at gamesarefun.com, Sony Computer Entertainment of Canada's marketing and public relations manager Matt Levitan said: "We are getting a second shipment next week, probably around the middle of next week. We'll know by Monday or Tuesday when they will be available."
About 400,000-500,000 PS3 consoles should be arriving within the next several weeks, with PS3s shipping directly to retailers instead of Sony's warehouses. We'll let you know when we hear confirmation or more PS3 preorder offers from retailers in the US.

The one PS3 game (or .98) to get is Resistance: Fall of Man, by developer Insomniac Games. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reported for each PS3 console sold, .98 games were sold (meaning: a lot of people sold their PS3s and the limited five Playstation 3 games available in Japan at launch caused the low ratio of game to console sales).
Resistance: Fall of Man is the top rated PS3 game (at a 90% rating) at this time, according to Gamerankings.com. The PS3's Call of Duty 3 ranks slightly behind Resistance. Other PS3 launch games are receiving average ratings, between 60-80%.
From Playstation.com:
"In Resistance: Fall of Man™, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save Europe and Asia from a horrific scourge. In mere decades, the Chimera – a species of unknown origin propagating a virus that converts other life forms into more Chimera – has overrun Russia and all of Europe. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale.
* Players dive into a deep frightening story that rewrites the 20th century and pits the United States and Britain against a horrific species of unknown origin.
* Encounter a wide variety of fluidly moving characters and creatures that exhibit more sophisticated behaviors and interact with their environments more realistically.
* Greater processing power on PLAYSTATION®3 and Blu-ray Disc™ technology enables more immersive visual and sound effects that heightening the chaos of large-scale warfare.
* A powerful rendering engine allows a greater variety of highly detailed and interactive environments for a console FPS experience, including large battlefields and sprawling military command centers.
* Engaging single player campaign, a co-operative mode and one of the most complete multiplayer offerings in a console game.
* Insomniac Games has combined its passion for creating exotic weapons and vehicles with a proprietary physics system to create a unique human and alien arsenal."
We'll find out soon enough if the game to console ratio increases for the US launch. What game(s) did you get with your PS3 (if you found one) today?

With today's release of the Playstation 3 console, the odds of finding a PS3 are going to be slim unless you've been camping out for days. Most online retailers cancelled their online sales due to extremely limited supplies. GameStop.com/EBgames.com is one retailer offering a limited sale of 20 gig PS3 bundles tonight, to be available for shipping on December 1st.
The 20 gig PS3 model, besides being 40 gigs less in storage space than the other 60 gig model, lacks built-in wi-fi capabilities and memory card slots (see the details here). With this online offering coming in a bundle only, expect the cost to go beyond the $599 60 gig model. The 20 gig model alone runs for $499.
An email notification sent by GameStop.com/EBgames.com gave word that the 20 gig PS3 bundle will be available from this link (or this link) tonight.
From GameStop.com/EBgames.com:
"Dear GameStop.com/EBgames.com Customer:
We will have an extremely limited supply of 20GB PlayStation 3 console bundles for preorder on our site Friday evening, November 17th.
We expect these bundles to ship on or before December 1st. When the bundle is activated on our site, you can find it here:
http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ps3/ps3_signup.asp
http://www.ebgames.com/gs/ps3/ps3_signup.asp
We will not offer 60GB PlayStation 3 console bundles until our store pre-orders have been filled, but check back soon for future preorder opportunities.
Receipt of this email does not guarantee an opportunity to purchase. Orders will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.
Thank you,
GameStop.com/EBgames.com"
