Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Roundup and Rumors E-mail
Sony PlayStation News Bits
Written by Rivithed
Thursday, 25 May 2006
PS 3 Online service will have downloadable games:
IGN has discovered, through an online job posting, that Sony PS3 will have downloadable games, similar to the Xbox Live Arcade and Wii's Virtual Console. Read more here.

"Low-end" PS3 may still allow 1080p output:
The 20 gig PS3 model has received much criticism for lacking a feature many next-gen gamers want: HDMI (1080p) output. According to this article at GameDaily, HDMI output can happen via component cables: "With the $499 version of the PlayStation 3 lacking HDMI output the Internet has been ablaze with the notion that it wouldn't be able to output in 1080p, thereby rendering its hi-def Blu-ray movie playing capabilities almost useless. And as such, Sony's advertising both models of the PS3 as Blu-ray players could be considered false advertising. However, if the $499 version will be able to output a 1080p signal through traditional component cables, the low-end PS3 suddenly becomes a much more appealing option."

Rumors of PS3 locking used games is false:
Sony has officially denied the rumor that the PS3 will lockout used games. This article at GamesIndustry.biz confirms from a Sony spokesperson that "there has been no official comment on this since the story that came up a few months ago - it hasn't changed since then, and we're quite surprised by why this has popped up again, to be honest.""

First production run of PS3s will be PAL units:
SCEE president and CEO David Reeves told MCV that Sony's initial production of Playstation 3 consoles will be in PAL format.

Xbox 360 "Background Downloading" and More Features Coming E-mail
Xbox 360 News Bits
Written by Rivithed
Thursday, 25 May 2006
Microsoft will be releasing an update in the upcoming days that will add new features to the Xbox 360 Dashboard. "Background downloading" will be added, giving gamers the ability to download content on their Xbox 360 while doing other things (hopefully like gaming!), instead of having the Xbox 360 solely occupied on completing downloads. A new option will be added to allow you to go directly to the Xbox Dashboard if you have a disc in the drive (this avoids auto-boot of the game or dvd in the drive upon power on). You will also have the option to continue watching DVDs from the last point where you stopped.

Venezuela's National Assembly Says "Mercenaries 2" Is U.S. Propaganda E-mail
General Gaming News Bits
Written by Rivithed
Thursday, 25 May 2006
Venezuela's National Assembly accuse Pandemic's "Mercenaries 2: World In Flames" of U.S. political propaganda. "I think the U.S. government knows how to prepare campaigns of psychological terror so they can make things happen later," said Congressman Ismael Garcia.

From WhoDigs: Lawmaker Gabriela Ramirez said "Mercenaries 2" gives a false vision of Chavez as a tyrant and Venezuela as being on the verge of chaos. She said the game could be banned under a proposed law aimed at protecting Venezuelan children from violent video games. In the U.S., "it sends a message to Americans: You have a danger next door, here in Latin America, and action must be taken," she said. "It's a justification for an imperialist aggression."

Mercenaries 2 is confirmed for the Playstation 3 and may also be coming to the Xbox 360. More on Hugo Chávez and Pandemic's Mercenaries 2: World In Flames.

Wednesday, 24 May 2006
The developers of the upcoming Lego themed Star Wars Episodes IV, V, VI, talk about re-creating their most memorable Star Wars moments, in the Lego game form:

"I love seeing the fantastic variety of aliens that populate the Mos Eisley Cantina come to life in LEGO form,” says Jonathan Smith, director at TT Games. “The Bith band members are particular favorites – and great to mix into the Character Customizer!”

“I think my favorite moment from Episode IV is the trench run,” says David Perkinson, producer at LucasArts.

“Yeah, I also get a thrill every time I see the X-wings of Red Squadron wheel into their assault on the Death Star,” adds Smith.

“I’ve really enjoyed working on the opening scene of Episode IV, set on the Rebel Blockade Runner, Tantive IV,” comments James Cunliffe, lead artist at TT Games.

“From Han’s cocky swagger to Vader’s menacing appearance, the personalities of all the main characters have been brilliantly brought to life by the animators throughout the game,” says John Hodskinson, TT Games’ lead programmer for the game.

Star Wars Lego IV, V, VI (*May the Force build with you" version) will be released by by Traveller’s Tales on PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Sony PSP™, Xbox 360™ and Xbox® video game system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube™ and Windows.
