Konami and Kojima Productions will be releasing the "Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel" on June 2006 for the Sony PSP system. The second interactive digital comic UMD to be released, following "The Silent Hill Experience," fuses art, animations, music and sound effects. Ashley Wood, the illustrator of IDW Publishing's Metal Gear comics, has created the stylized illustrations in this digital story of Solid Snake’s first adventure. The UMD movie format may be suffering a quick death, but this interactive digital comic format may open the doors to a new experience for gaming fans on the Sony PSP. Let's hope a Castlevania Digital Comic comes next! Check out some pages of the digital comic here.

A forum post has revealed a patent filed by Sony on April 13, 1999 for movement detection, similar to what is to be used in the new Playstation 3 controller introduced at E3 last week.
From the International Patent Classification web site (European Patent Office): "PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To instruct an operation by the movement of a small controller that is close to the movement of a character by making the controller movable, detecting its movement and outputting a signal, and switch-recognizing the direction of the movement on the basis of the outputted signal. SOLUTION: The controller detects an angular speed by a detection section provided in a connecting section that connects the right and left operating sections of a controller unit 82. For example, rotation in the direction of rolling in relation to the right and left operating buttons 55, 56 of the left operating section is detected as an angular speed in the direction of rotation in the XY plane by the detection section 70 with the Z axis as the central axis. The detection section 70 is comprised of a movement detection section 71 made up of an angular speed sensor 72 and an amplifier 73, and a direction detection section 74 made up of movement direction recognition switches 79, 80. Therefore, movement can be instructed by the movement of the controller without operating the operating buttons 55, 56, etc."

Until now, there have been a couple of air cooling solution peripherals for the Xbox 360 (from Pelican and Nyko). Team Xtender claims these external solutions do not directly cool off the hot CPU/GPUs on the Xbox 360. Team Xtender will be releasing a solution called the "XCM 360 high speed air cooler," which will allow you to directly cool the CPU/GPU processors with an external monitor.
From Team Xternder: "External Xbox 360 air coolers can only cool the temperature of the Xbox 360's outer surface but do not cool the temperature of the CPU/GPU; therefore, making them useless to combat CPU/GPU overheating. The XCM high speed air cooler directly cools the 360 CPU and GPU. Using internal temperature measuring devices, this product monitors the temperature of the 360 CPU and GPU. XCM high speed air cooler's external controller will allow you to control the speed of the fan while it monitors the temperature of the
360 CPU and GPU. AUTO mode will automatically adjust the fan speed depending on the temperature of the CPU and GPU."
See the diagram of the XCM 360 external controls here. Watch Team Xtender's web site for updates.

Many were surprised to find that the new PS3 controller will be lacking the "rumble" function, common in most gaming controllers today. Sony dropped the feature after adding the "tilt" motion function to its PS3 controller. According to Sony, the rumble function was dropped because it could not operate with the motion function. Rumor was that an ongoing legal battle between Sony and Immersion, developers of the rumble function, was what may have influenced Sony's decision to drop the rumble feature. Other console manufacturers pay royalties to Immersion to include the rumble function.
Immersion has stepped up with an offer to Sony to put the rumble in the PS3 controller. From GamesIndustry.biz: "For this to happen, Sony would have to drop its current appeal against the 2004 lawsuit that saw it told to pay approximately USD 90 million in damages to Immersion, which had alleged it made illegal use of its "haptic" (rumble) technologies. Immersion president Victor Viegas said he'd "offered them numerous solutions to the problem". "I don't believe it's a very difficult problem to solve, and Immersion has experts that would be happy to solve that problem for them."
[EDIT 5/22/06]: From Microsoft's Peter Moore: “The motion sensing, particularly at the sacrifice of force feedback - I'm not even sure that's a good trade off in itself.” Source: Eurogamer.net

According to the "Anatomy of a Gamer" survey conducted by IGN's GamerMetrics and Research Solutions, gamers are "switching to smaller digital formats for entertainment and replacing realistic TV and movies with animated and comic-based entertainment".
"The Music category documented a sweeping majority of this young male demographic have moved to the MP3 format, many use iPods. The research also showed that global pop sensations Gorillaz, U2 and Eminem top their playlists. Even though gamers prefer watching DVDs to the box office, FOX's 'X-Men: The Last Stand' was the most anticipated upcoming big screen release, while Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' followed close behind. On the small screen FOX's two rowdy animated families "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" led with Comedy Central's "South Park". Survey-takers also voted for Google, Apple and Coca Cola as their top brands."
The survey was conducted in March, 2006 through IGN.com. Write Comment (0 Comments) |
