Redesigned Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Scheduled By Q1 2007 Release in Japan PDF Print E-mail

An article in the latest issue of PlayStation Magazine (PSM) says that a redesign of the Sony PSP is being worked on. The main features said to be included in the redesign are:

- Built-in EyeToy Camera
- Thinner & Lighter Design
- 8 GB Samsung Flash Drive

What is not expected to change:
- UMD discs remain
- Same graphics and capabilities as current PSP
- Will keep "PSP" name (not called PSP 2)
- No secondary analog stick will be included
- Price will be the same as current PSP

The redesign may see a March 2007 launch in Japan. Rumors of a redesign have been around for some time. See a previous report we posted in April 2006 here. Sony has said little on a redesign, other than indicating the PSP is still relatively new to the market (launched on December 12, 2004 in Japan and March 24, 2005 in USA/Canada).

Read more and see the magazine scans at PSP Fanboy. No official announcement has come from Sony as of yet. No images of the redesigned PSP have surfaced yet either (one image of a fan made PSP is circulating on various sites, causing some confusion).

They need to figure out a way to lower the price of the PSP. If they expect to compete with Nintendo, they are going to have to find a way to lower the prices.
