GameStop's Shoppes at Pinecrest store is the first GameStop in South Florida to have their Wii kiosk up and running. Just turn in your keys for a Wii controller and hop in for a virtual ride with Excite Truck, the one and only game featured on the Wii kiosk.
Here's a brief rundown of my experience (which is the first with the Wii): My first turn was pretty unsuccessful, sending my truck spinning 360 degrees. I over did it on the controls and my gaming instinct kept being insistently stubborn to thumb that d-pad. Luckily I had the store manager, Rich Robinson, to coach me through a few basic controls. After an embarassing first run, I started getting the hang of it and I went from gaming instinct to a bit of driving instinct. That definitely made the controls transparent and the Wii experience that more definitive. I managed to get 1st place by 3 rounds and eventually unlocked another truck and circuit.
Rich told me the Nintendo Representative that installed the kiosk said the store is the first in the South Florida area to have their Wii hooked up. So if you happen to live nearby, be sure to stop by and check it out at 9065 South Dixie Highway. The Wii kiosk looks pretty slick and beams for attention with its blazing blue lighting. You won't miss it! A countdown clock was also spotted behind the counter, marked at 16 days to go at the time it was photographed. Check out the pictures below! Thanks Rich!
UPDATE 11/3/06: Here's some answers to some of the questions we've received on the kiosk and the Wii:
- The Wii remote is not attached to the kiosk. You have to turn in your car keys (or your driver's license) to check out the Wii remote to play (the store had two of them). The battery compartment of the Wii remote also has a big label that says "PROPERTY OF GAMESTOP".
- The Wii's blue light (around the black area/where the discs are inserted) did not turn on. The store manager never saw it turn on (I did ask about it). From what I last heard on it, it would turn on at certain times (maybe when connected online?). Wii consoles at the Nintendo World Store were said to have the blue lights on. It is also shown on the packaging. If anyone can confirm how the blue light works, let me know!
- Excite Truck is the only demo for now, but the demos will most likely change throughout the two weeks until launch. Wii Sports was said to be the next one most likely to show.
- This Wii kiosk is located in the city of Miami (Florida). Here is a map!

) Wii is so fucking awesome I had to put a bunch of faces on my comment | I love this Written by Guest on 2006-11-03 17:38:17 I live around there :grin | Blue Light Written by Guest on 2006-11-03 16:44:21 The blue light in the disc slot only comes on when there is NO DISC in the Wii. This is so you can load a disc in the dark. When there is a disc in the system, the blue light is off. | which city is this at?
