Play Upcoming PS3 Game "flOw" Online PDF Print E-mail

flOw is a game the piqued my curiousity with its Electroplankton-like look and the simplistic description on Sony's PS3 Downloadable Games page: "flOw draws you in to the evolution of a simple aquatic creatures journey through a surreal abyss."

There hasn't been much description beyond that from Sony. flOw turns out to be the result of Jenova Chen's MFA thesis research, a video game design graduate from USC School of Cinematic Arts.

From Jenova Chen's thesis: "20 years ago, with an intention to explain happiness, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi found Flow, the feeling of complete and energized focus in an activity, with a high level of enjoyment and fulfillment."

The description of flOw on the game designer's page reads as follows: "Originated as a practice and testbed for Embedded Difficulty Adjustment theory formulated in Jenova Chen's game design thesis, flOw is a web based game designed to attract a wider audience, allowing players with different tastes to enjoy the experience in their own way. The game features an abstract aquatic world inviting player to dive in, to learn, to explore, to survive..."

The gameplay is simple: navigate and collect creatures with red dots to dive deeper, collect creatures with blue dots to surface. Collect other creatures to grow longer and evolve. Accelerate with the left mouse button. Dive right in to the online playable flash version of flOw here, which will be available soon from the Playstation Store, on the PS3.

It would have been cool if the flash version worked on the Wii using the Internet Channel (Wii Opera Browser), but it does not (I tried!). We'll let you know when flOw is available from the PS3's Online Store.
