The Begining of the End of Powerleveling? PDF Print E-mail

In a move that is sure to upset power levelers everywhere, the online auction house eBay announced a cessation of RMT's (Real Money Transfers) on its site. These involved the exchange of virtual property such as in-game currency, items and accounts/characters that had become a fixture in the world of MMORPGS. eBay said this is decision was in-part due to the possible legal complexities of such transactions and the indefinite nature of the property's ownership.

While most players believe these items belong to those who earned them, eBay's decision could be just the first among many to grant ownership of virtual property to the game makers. eBay's policy on digitally delivered goods states: "The seller must be the owner of the underlying intellectual property, or authorized to distribute it by the intellectual property owner." and since eBay now considers the owner to be the game maker, these items can no longer be sold without the consent of Blizzard, Sony, Etc. This would signify a paradigm shift and coupled with the rumored impending taxation of RMT's, could shut the door on such transactions entirely. For now however, other sites such as IGE.com are still available to serve the needs of buyers and sellers alike. No one knows what the future of virtual property exchanges will be, but as always we will keep you posted.
