Nintendo was recognized by The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences by claiming five awards, three swept up by the Wii's bundled game, Wii Sports.

"These awards, granted by a group of our industry peers, demonstrate that it's possible to please both new and experienced game players," says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "To see honors given to games as varied as Twilight Princess, Wii Sports and Brain Age tells us the industry hungers for new ideas and great games. We believe both Wii and Nintendo DS are specifically equipped to deliver those experiences."

Top honored games include:

Outstanding Innovation in Gaming: Wii Sports
Outstanding Achievement in Game-Play Engineering: Wii Sports
Outstanding Achievement in Game Design: Wii Sports
Outstanding Achievement in Story and Character Development: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Hand-Held Game of the Year: Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day

The awards were presented on February 8th at the annual Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain summit in Las Vegas. In total, Nintendo received 19 nominations in 11 different gaming categories.

Sort of... but whatever. it works, it's simple, it's affordable, and (most importantly) it's fun. Hooray for ninty winning well deserved awards!

is it just me or is there something vaguely apple-esque about nintendos tactics with this console?

I think the wii could be a good thing for gaming generally because so many people who have never had a games console before are buying the wii... It could be the machine that succesfully brings gaming to a more mainstream audiance, something the xbox 360 had been trying to do.

What would be really clever is if they then make a high power console to upgrade those new gamers.
