Could the next generation of console gaming be the last one? Lars Butler, Trion World Network founder, is clearly vocal in saying it is.

From CVG's coverage of the recent Hewlett-Packard PC gaming product lineup announcement: "I believe the days of the console are numbered," said Trion World Network founder Lars Butler. "There is one more generation of gaming consoles and that is it," he claimed. Other PC industry professionals are also mentioned in the CVG article in their belief that PC gaming will lead to the demise of console gaming as we know it. Commodore came back recently as well with its Commodore Gaming line up of gaming PCs.

So far, the only gaming console to tackle online play pretty well has been Microsoft with its Xbox 360, and we all know they come from a PC background. Could that also be a foretelling of things to come? One thing to remember is what got us into console gaming in the first place: having a low maintenance home entertainment system that comes in a box and doesn't need yearly upgrading of video cards, harddrives and memory cards to play the latest game releases.

Although, look at the recent release of the Xbox 360 Elite. That model just topped the Xbox 360 Platinum for it's expanded harddrive space and HDMI video port. Maybe the console gaming world is edging itself overboard? Or consumer demand is fueling the change for things like online multiplayer gaming, the use of keyboard/mouse controls and other peripherals traditionally found in PCs and web browsing capabililties.

Whichever way you look at it, the line may definitely be blurring. As Nintendo's DS Lite sales success has proven, the gaming experience is what matters most. No matter how many ways they want to define and coin the tech, it's all computer chips in the end.
