Guitar Hero 1 will cost you $97.76 at this rate on the Xbox 360 PDF Print E-mail

The first Guitar Hero II downloadable game content is now available from the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace. The tracks released are the same tracks from PS2's Guitar Hero 1 release, which of course begs for comparison in pricing. Let's just say if you thought digital distribution would save you a few bucks, it won't.

If you break it down, there are 47 tracks in the Guitar Hero 1 release for the PS2, which retails for about $40 currently. That's about .85 cents a track. Each Track Pack is available for 500 Microsoft Points ($6.25) on the Xbox 360, which includes three tracks. That's about $2.08 a track on the Xbox 360. And to put it into perspective, if it keeps at this rate, that means Guitar Hero 1 on the Xbox 360 will cost you $97.76. While future track releases and pricing has yet to be announced, it will surely be judged according to the response on these purchases. Put your MS points where your mouth is, 360 gamers.

Guitar Hero Track Pack 1:
Bark at the Moon - Ozzy Osbourne
Hey You - The Exies
Ace of Spades - Motorhead

Guitar Hero Track Pack 2:
Killer Queen - Queen
Take it Off - The Donnas
Frankenstein - The Edgar Winter Group

Guitar Hero Track Pack 3:
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Infected -Bad Religon
Stellar - Incubus

UPDATE: A petition has started online here.: "We have signed this petition with our xbox live gamertags, track us and you'll find that we have not and will not purchase additional songs for Guitar Hero II at this price point." Thanks to the readers for letting us know.

UPDATE 2: A posting over at MajorNelson.com from Major himself in response to the pricing: "Remember, these song packs contain *licensed* songs. Licensing songs gets pretty expensive, and complicated when you involve other countries. Anyone who knows a little bit about the music industry and publishing can tell you that it's not a walk in the park to secure content and the proper distribution licenses for songs. I'll pass along the comments.

Just because songs are covers does not really matter. The song publishing is what can *really* be tricky in terms of licensing. Again, as you guys know I will share the feedback with everyone here, so thanks for understanding and thinking about the legalities of it all."

Maybe a disc/retail release would have been better, in that case. So much for the much anticipated downloadable content that was touted before its release.

UPDATE 3: Joystiq conducted an interview with Major Nelson on the Guitar Hero downloadable content pricing. Check it out here.

UPDATE 4: We contacted Red Octane's PR group to get the Red Octane side of the story and pricing. The response we received: "In regards to your questions, w/ Major Nelson’s interview already posted regarding the DLC for Guitar Hero, we don’t have any further comments or other details to add at the moment."

I think that all of the people that are whining about the prices need to get jobs, or at least ones that don't involve flippin' burgers. Anything under $100 is not that expensive... besides, isn't is also a convenience to not have to switch disks to

all the people that posted things like "This is a reasonable price, you need jobs," are probably working to get people to think its reasonable. that or they are spoiled rich litle kids whose dadies bought it for them. the price is totally unreasonable

Oh, cry more. You got 10 new songs already and now have the option of getting the GH1 songs with the new GH2 system (easier hammer-ons and pull-offs. PS2/PS3 owners don't get new songs until Fall when Rock Band/GH3 is released or when this '80s editio

Here is why I am complaining. Lets do the math shall we: We got 60 songs plus 10 extra songs from this game. Lets forget about the 10 extra ones altogether. Typically a game costs 69.99 CDN so lets just go with that price for this purpose and say th

Honestly GH1 is only 25 songs, Besides Get Ready 2 Rokk, the extra songs are not really worth it. I don't see red octane selling The Breaking Wheel for the same price as Ace of Spades. And if you pay for it then is your own fault.
BTW I also love All

According to Major Nelson "Just because songs are covers does not really matter."

That's just crap, it makes all the difference in the world. When you sell covers, you only owe a small "mechanical" royalty to the author. That fee is set by la

But they might know what their doing here. YES I think the songs are way high in price. YES I think its BS that they push and push and push for a 360 release mostly for the DLC, and then they end up forkin us for it. But YES I will buy the songs. and

If it was up to red octane they would be free. Just like the gears of war maps epic wants to release for free. but microsoft wont let them. microsoft just wants to squeeze every penny out of everyone.

GG Microsoft...
Is everyone broke or what?
Written by Guest on 2007-04-11 00:00:00
Why is everyone whining about this? It's a couple bucks for hours of entertainment. You spend more than this going to a 2 hour movie. Everyone should quit complaining and stop being cheap asses.
Written by Guest on 2007-04-11 00:00:00
I'm surprised that people don't think that it's RED OCTANE/ACTIVISION that set the pricing. I mean, come on... they are planning on releasing GH3 later this year. GH2 hasn't even been out for a half a year yet and they are going to release a 3rd o
