Sony has said today that a new PS3 model may be coming soon. The 20 gig PS3 ($499 MSRP) was recently dropped from US distribution, leaving the 60 Gig PS3 model, at $599, as the lone PS3 model available.
In a report from Reuters, Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said "For users who vigorously store (games and other entertainment content) in the PS3, 20-giga is probably going to be too small, and even 60-giga may not be big enough eventually," He continued, "We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX, Blu-ray drive and network capability. But outside that realm, addition and deletion is quite possible." We know that the internal PS2 backwards compatibility hardware was not included in PAL PS3 models with software drivers functioning as a replacement, so this is likely to happen to NTSC PS3s. Could the 60 gig model be lowered in price to introduce a second higher capacity PS3? Or is Sony reacting to Microsoft's recently announced Xbox 360 Elite? We'll keep you posted on updates!
