Sony's latest system update 1.70 was released today. The update allows you to play PSone games on the PS3, which were previously only playable on the PSP, and use your saved data on the PSP to continue playing the PSone game. The vibration switch gets flipped on for the PS3 as well. PS1 and PS2 games can use the vibration feature in "accessories that are for use with Playstation and Playstation 2 format software." Well, it would be nice if we could get a PS2 Dualshock adapter for the PS3. Could this mean that we'll be seeing one soon?
Here are the Playstation 3 firmware update features listed on the XMB:
- You can now download Playstation format software from the Playstation Store and play it on the PS3 system.
- You can now also used saved data for Playstation format software on the PSP.
- You can now use the vibration function of accessories that are for use with Playstation and Playstation 2 format software.
See more at the official PS3 system update page, which was not updated at the time of this writing.
NOTE: We were not able to see or use the current lineup of PS1 games (such as Medievil and Crash Bandicoot) on the PS3. It's unclear how you will use them at this point. We'll bring you an update as soon as we find out more. As for the rumble functionality, the only way you can get that right now is with the Logitech Driving Force wheel.
UPDATE: IGN received a response from Sony on why currently PS1 titles are not playable although the firmware now supports it: "We'll be replacing the older PS1 games with fixed versions sometime in May," said SCEA manager, Al de Leon. "Once the new games are uploaded, you'll be able to download the games straight to your hard drive and play them from there."
