Official Announcement from SCEA: New 80 Gig Playstation 3 With Motorstorm; 60 GB PS3 Drops To $499 PDF Print E-mail

Sunday, 08 July 2007
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has officially announced a new 80 GB PS3 and a $100 price drop on the existing 60 GB PS3 model. The announcement confirms the 60 GB PS3 dropping $100, to $499, and a new SKU for the Playstation 3. The new PS3 model will have an 80 GB HD capacity and include Motorstorm for $599. The new PS3 pricing and 80 Gig HD model will be available in the US and Canada in August.

From SCEA: "Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), Inc. today announced a new 80GB model of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Beginning in August, the new PS3 model will be available in North America for a suggested retail price of $599/$659 CND and will be sold with the popular online-enabled racing game MotorStorm™. In conjunction with this news, the company also announced that effective immediately, the current 60GB PS3 model will be available in North America for $499/$549 CND, or $100 below the original launch price. "

UPDATE: Added YouTube video below, with President & CEO Jack Tretton making the official announcement. Note the mention of a "new download service."

UPDATE 2: The 80 GB PS3 will be the first NTSC released PS3 without the PS2 Emotion Engine hardware. We received confirmation from SCEA that the PS3 80 GB model will not use the current PS3's 20GB/60GB PS2 Emotion Engine hardware, used in running Playstation 2 games on the PS3. "The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model," said Kimberly Otzman, SCEA Corporate Communications Representative.

UPDATE 3: Rumors have been circulating the world wide web that the SIXAXIS controller shown on the new PS3 80 GB packaging may be the TouchSense/rumble SIXAXIS controller, however it is the same PS3 SIXAXIS currently available. "The controller that comes with the 80GB is the same the controller we shipped at launch, in the packaging the PS button is probably lit up," said an SCEA representative. Lit up or touched up. That effect has been seen on the SIXAXIS in previous PS3 marketing materials, during the original PS3 launch.

UPDATE 4: The $499 Playstation 3 is now available from Amazon.com. Don't forget, you can get 5 free Blu-ray movies too (good July 1-Sept 30, 2007)!

One of the great things about PS3 that no one seems to talk about is the animations while playing music. Photo mode is great as well and photo being used as a back drop to music makes great videos as well.

What about the backwards compatibility?
Written by Guest on 2007-07-17 00:00:00
Yo, so which backwards compatibility will work better the one in the old 60gigs PS3 or the software emulation in the 80gig version? And what about PS1 games, will these work on the new version of the PS3?
finally and right before E3
Written by Guest on 2007-07-09 00:00:00
so people can use the PS Store for demo content and see other offerings .. the 80GB version is an OK deal but its better than nothing.

oh and if this is this weeks press release folks .. look out for the E3 announcements from sony ;)

Written by Guest on 2007-07-09 00:00:00
You get more for your money. People bought $600 PS3s, so even if they didn't fly off shelves before people will continue to buy it.

Since you get more for the same price, more people might start buying it.

it has a ps2 in it. with the hardware emotion engine out, you'll have to download updates to play ps1/ps2 games. with the 80gb, you will get updates slowly like on xbox 360
