The latest industry speculation on the Playstation 3 price cut comes from Capcom. To catch up on what's happened in the last week with the PS3 pricing and models: Last week the Playstation 3 60 GB model dropped from $599 to $499. A new 80 GB model was introduced for $599, with Motorstorm, which should be arriving at retail shelves by August. Rumors that the 60 GB PS3 would eventually be discontinued arose from SCEE president David Reeves, which has since been discounted by SCEA's Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications. Now Capcom adds their thoughts on to where the PS3 will be going by year end.
From Reuters: "The number of PS2 users is still growing and a shift to the PS3 is on the back burner. But, the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually," said Capcom Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe. So Capcom is anticipating yet another PS3 price cut, which could be likely if the 60 GB is no longer around and an optional PS3 80 GB model without Motorstorm is introduced for this Holiday season. Sony stopped producing the 20GB PS3 model earlier this year, leaving the 60 GB as the sole PS3 on the market for a few months. That move can also be foretelling of what is to come within a few months of having the 80 GB PS3 on the market. The year-end lower cost 80GB PS3 would also close the gap from its console competitors in the holiday season. From Reuters.
