Robbie Bach, Microsoft's president of the Entertainment and Devices division, spoke to investors recently on the Xbox 360 hardware failures (aka "Red RIng Of Death"). Spong.com posted on the Bach's response on the recently announced three-year warranty extension for Xbox 360 consoles.
From Spong.com: "Attempting to pre-empt the question, "Tell me about the specific component that failed that caused you to have to do the warranty reserve", Bach told the assembled shareholders on July 26th:
“It's a design challenge that we've had to work around and create a new design to solve that problem, and for the interaction of a variety of different components. And so that's a Microsoft design question, not some component manufacturer's problem or our manufacturing partner's problems. It's something we've had to work on. We know we have a much better design in the market now. We verified that.”
The article at Spong states that it may be the Elite Xbox 360 that are bullet-proof from the Red Ring of Death. However, the Elite Xbox 360 hasn't been out too long, so it may be too soon to really know. Searching YouTube, there was one video claiming to be an Elite Xbox 360 experiencing the "red ring of death" hardware failure (see below). It only takes a little searching around on Microsoft's own xbox.com Forums to hear the frustration some Xbox 360 console owners have been experiencing with their broken consoles.
I recently returned my third Xbox 360 console, being an owner since the 360 was launched. Microsoft's Xbox 360 warranty repair center is currently estimating a 4-6 week repair time. When I asked a manager at a local GameStop how the returns have been, I was told "it's a huge problem." We'll have to see if the rumored Falcon Xbox 360 can save the day for Microsoft and gamers. With the rumored Xbox 360 price-cut looming about, maybe it will be a good time to pickup a backup, or wait until the risky hardware is flushed out of the market.

I would not reccommend buying the elite, unless you are planning on saving a TON of things on it. I was like dude I can count I know this one cost me 500.00 bucks so I sent it in yesterday had to use my own box they sent postage via e-mail so had to print it then called UPS had them pick up my package and delivery guy to it to the Mesquite UPS station and it was processed and delivered to the Mesquite Repair center in texas Early this morning. Basically if you look after your 360 on a clean flat surface laid horizontally as well as the power supply box in an open airy environment you'll be fine and FFS keep it off the carpet!!!

I use my 360 every day, weekdays its on constantly from the minute I get home from work around 5.30-6pm until midnight. If I am not working then the console is on for around 14 hours a day.
I use my 360 for many things, gaming obviously, watching DVDs, streaming movies and music from my PC.
To date I have never had the RROD (touching wood at the moment) and hopefully never will. From reading many articles on the forums I see that I have been lucky so far, andwith the prices of packages now just over the £100 mark, I am going to buy a backup just in case. Last thing I want to happen is to be in the middle of a COD4 online match and my 360 to die on me!!!!

Each time I was able to pray it back into working until it finally died for good. FYI, it was always cared for, always kept out in the open and well ventlilated. Falcon or no falcon, that is hardly the solution. My unit was manufactured 10/07 by the way.

I will sell my 20+ games that i own(yes, i have spend a LOT of money in gaming) and stick with my ps2 until the rrod is not an issue anymore, if that ever happen...

I doubt it had 10 hours of use, manufacture date was 7/19/2007 so despite what MS or Mr Bach says, this is still a problem, even on the Elite. Going to go back to the XBOX original, its quiet and it works!

Microsoft was so rude before they just extended the warranty and now they are saying 10-12 weeks for returns. So, if thats the case, out of 16months of ownership, I have had about 3months with it being repaired. It stinks. Everyone I know that bought one at the same time I have is one their 2nd or 3rd one. Obviously a big problem.

Mine is a Launch system and has never had any problems as I have always kept my consoles out in the open. Xbox1 and PS2 gave me more headaches than my 360 does.

Jaime Written by Guest on 2007-07-31 15:11:10I finally get it... xbox has some die hard fans... if microsoft sell them crappy consoles, then say the elite is problems free, they forze all the hard fans buy at least 2 consoles, and then say, sorry the elite has problem too, buy the falcon, so they can sell more than 3 consoles to each hard xbox fan. same they do, scratching game disc and forze to buy more than 2 copies of the same game. GOOD JOB microsoft, now you can tell developers you have the greatest market share and the better attach rate for games. by the way, if you are returning your defective console to repair, i highly recomend to find and xbox inside friend... when their console fail or close to fail or more than 3 months use, they dont get it repaired or get a reburfished one, they get a NEW one with the benefit that they can put it as sales. OR WHAT...you never ask yourself why you get xbox used every time you send your failed console. just ask some microsoft supervisor inside friend the secret code so they can send you a new xbox 360 for your failed one
