The Xbox 360 Core console is rumored to be on its way out of the Xbox 360 console family. A Target employee took pictures of the store's PDA, which was sent by an anonymous source to Joystiq. The pictures were blurry, (see a slightly reduced and enhanced version of the blurry pic below), but you could make out "Discontinued" and "Xbox 360 Core Hardware Sys." Reports from last week were that Best Buy had also listed the Xbox 360 Core console as discontinued as well.
Best Buy lists the Xbox 360 Core as "Sold Out" online and "Limited Availability" in store, while the Xbox 360 Premium and Xbox 360 Elite are still available online. As for Target, the Core Xbox 360 is not listed online. Without the Xbox 360 hard drive, and all the downloadable content on the Xbox Live Marketplace, would you really want an Xbox 360 without hard drive space? It may be good to get a Core if you plan on getting a used hard drive from those Xbox 360 gamers getting rid of their 20GB HDD on eBay for those 120 GB HDD recently released. Or even as a backup while your 360 is out for repair, if you can't be without your 360. With the Elite, Premium and the Halo 3 Xbox 360 console coming soon, there won't be room for the limited Xbox 360 Core taking up shelf space. Microsoft has not announced any plans to stop stocking the Core for now.
