Looks like my Xbox 360 console has been exorcised from the red ring of death hardware failure. Today, I received my Xbox 360 console back from Microsoft's repair center. Using BenHeck's Xbox 360 probe technique to check to see if the repaired Xbox 360 came back with the heat sink, you can see from the animated GIF image below that it did indeed return with the new heat sink installed.
A picture was taken, using a digital camera, from the bottom-side of the Xbox 360's vent holes. One picture shows the unobstructed view of the Xbox 360's disc drive (see the screw?) on a Xbox 360 console (no heatsink), while the other picture has the new extended GPU heat sink blocking the view of the DVD drive. For now, it appears to be working fine. I'll keep you updated if the red ring ever returns! Hopefully not all Xbox 360 consoles will have to go through the process, but Microsoft may have covered themselves, should that be the case.
