Curious gamers at ps3vault.com tested the Playstation 3's durability under different environmental conditions. The stress test involved three conditions: 73F degree "Typical Family Room," 50F-0F degree "Freezer Van" and 100F-120F degree "Heat Sauna." The test was done under "continuous usuage of 108 hours with no interruption to power supply."
The Playstation 3 managed to survive gameplay sessions and blu-ray movie playback while under the different conditions, with only "slight vibration," while in the family room after 12 hours, "slight sluggishness in playback" when at 0F degree, and a "slight burning smell" that came in around the 64 hour mark when in the 110F degree environment. After all that, the PS3 is still currently working. We'll have to take their word for it (or take it with a grain of salt), since no pictures or videos were posted. You'd think after all that trouble of testing, some pics or video would have been provided! Well, if I had to say from my personal experience of next-gen console durability, I'm still on my first PS3 and now on my fourth Xbox 360. If you've been keeping up with our news lately, you'll know the Xbox 360 temperature problem (aka Red Ring of Death) has supposedly been solved by the added heat sink. From Sony's Playstation Blog.
