Wii Shortage Prolonged Due To Low Chip Supplies PDF Print E-mail

This is probably the longest running game console shortages yet. Since its debut last year in November 2006, the Wii has been in short supply at retailers. I've see the Wii console only once on store shelves (at a Target store), ever since I purchased it by reserving months ahead. When I visited the Nintendo World Store in June 2007, the Wii was selling out every morning. Besides the rising popularity of the console, it looks like chip shortages may cause an even shorter supply. A report from DigiTimes says a low supply on some of the Wii's chips may mean a shortage is likely to loom for a while.

From DigiTimes: "Due to the tight supply of components such as IC chips and PCBs, Nintendo's plans to expand production of its Wii games console, originally set for June, have been delayed, according to Taiwan-based component makers."

Will Nintendo be able to ramp up production in time for the Holiday season and outpace the Xbox 360 in sales? With the shortage of Wii components and the impending media assault from Halo 3, it may be a close one.
