Sony PSP Slim (PSP-2000) VS. Original PSP (PSP-1000): Side-by-side Comparison PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexis Morgenstern
Saturday, 15 September 2007
The new PSP Slim launched last week, as the Limited Edition Daxter Entertainment Pack for $199.99. The bundle includes the Ice Silver PSP, 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, Daxter PSP Game, Family Guy: The Freakin' Sweet Collection, battery pack, AC adapter and cord, and manuals. It's a much better deal in comparison to the $169.99 Piano Black Core PSP, which doesn't include the game, UMD or 1 GB Memory stick. After spending some time with the Ice Silver PSP, here's some of the pros and cons:

Pros:
+ Lighter and slimmer design is a plus. You won't feel like you're carrying around a brick!
+ Faster loading time. About 80 seconds to get to Lego Star Wars II title screen on PSP Slim, about 90 seconds on original PSP.
+ Slightly brighter and more saturated colors
+ Can charge through USB cable (although it'll take longer than using AC adapter)
+ Video output capability (however, the cable is not included)
+ Analog stick not as stiff as original PSP
+ Better placement of speakers (on the face of the PSP, rather than the bottom).
+ No dead pixels (my original PSP has a couple)

Cons:
- Video output cable not included.
(PSP 2000 Component AV Cable and PSP 2000 Composite AV Cable available for $19.99)
- UMD Tray feels fragile
- Memory Stick door feels flimsy and fragile (when pulled out)
- Battery compartment door doesn't feel as secure as original PSP

If you're new to the Sony PSP, it's a no-brainer to start with the PSP Slim (PSP-2000). If you already have the PSP-1000, here's a photographic side-by-side comparison (below) of the two PSPs for you to see if it's worth upgrading.

Image

Image
The original PSP is bulkier in the back, mainly due to larger battery.

Image
A top view comparison of the PSP-1000 to PSP-2000, again showing the majority of the weight was shaved off the back.

Image
Side-by-side top view.

Image
Battery compartments open. PSP-2000 uses a more compact battery.

Image
UMD disc tray opens wider on PSP-2000, but feels fragile.

Image
You don't insert a UMD in the PSP-2000, rather, you place it on the back tray.

Image
Another view of UMD trays on both PSPs. Notice the slim arm support on PSP-2000. Hopefully they can withstand the use.

Image
The analog nub doesn't feel so resistant on the PSP-2000 and has a wider opening around it.

Image
Good move on the speaker "holes". By placing the speakers on the top of the new PSP, the audio is less likely to be muffled when holding it or placing it on a PSP stand for viewing.

Image
The wireless on/off switch is better positioned on the top and more clearly marked with "WLAN".

Image
The Memory Stick door of the PSP-1000 felt a little "snappier" and secure.

Image
The Memory Stick door of the PSP-2000 feels very rubbery and light. Hopefully the slim supports won't go!

Image
Don't be fooled by the similar look of the audio out port of the PSP-1000. The PSP-2000 features new video output capabilities to play games, UMD movies or see pictures on your HD or SD TV.

Image
The PSP-2000's colors are more saturated and brighter.

Image
Can you tell which PSP is which?

PSP old one
Written by Guest on 2008-06-26 05:46:41
my psp broke about a year ago (before the 2000 came out) so just last month i send it to sony for a replacement (89dlls) then i just heard about the features in the new one. i still would keep the old one cause it seems more secure and protected, the new one is lite and more breakable, and i dont really care if its bigger, i got big pants and bags dont matter! any way there's more accessories for the old one then the new one

i just bought a god of war psp and had it for almost a month just bought new game was workin now cant read any disc
Psp 1000 vs. Psp 2000
Written by Guest on 2008-06-16 13:37:56
I have had a psp 1000 before. I am getting a Psp 2000. I know how a psp 1000 works, I have had 2, One problem I had was The psp 1000 sound stopped working when mine got a little wet, My home button stopped working also. I am a freak when it comes to scratches and finger prints, so the psp fat is better if you are a freak like me because of the rigged back. If you hate finger prints and youy get a psp slim, Go with silver and white, The finger prints dont show! Also take really good care of your psp. I've broken two psps in 4 years. One would not work and the other fell off the second florr of the ,all and shattered! So I have learned my leason, if you have the hand strap use it when walking in the mall!
Written by Guest on 2008-06-05 13:14:47
i've only got a slim PSP
but dunno wether 3 trade it 4 an old one?

i just got my psp 1001 and felt great my friend just told me he got the psp slim and while he was taking it out of box it sliped out of his hands and broke completly.psp 1001 is sturder!!!!!
Written by Guest on 2008-06-02 17:32:08
i am never going for a slim psp becuz i already have a fat one with custom firmware!! The slim has patched their battery so that you cant really hack it or do much with it except for the basics. I never have to pay for a game again and i'm gonna keep it that way!!
BIG STUFF FOR BIG HAND
Written by Guest on 2008-05-22 09:36:41
i got big and fat hand..so i need something big so that i can hold properly...so PSP FAT is good for people like me...
Performance not the looks
Written by Guest on 2008-05-13 02:16:04
I choose 2000, its better in performance and graphics including its AV feature.
Written by Guest on 2008-05-08 04:15:43
i vote psp fat because the slim version is only a copy of that version without psp fat it cannot have more feautures
Written by Guest on 2008-04-13 19:23:53
sonny is smart they know monster hunter is a hit game and they put it on psp so they can sell psp. smart realy smart.

Written by Guest on 2008-04-10 13:16:41
Boys about the sound which is the best?? which one reproduces better the mp3 files?? thank you ;)
Written by Guest on 2008-04-01 10:24:25
i think PSP-1000 is the best it is more comfortable to use rather than the PSP-2000 it is more complicated because of the thin housing and the LCD..i'm the technician of PSP and slim and cellphone and i knew it.

Written by Guest on 2008-03-20 01:33:11
in terms of durability, psp 1000 is more durable.. it has a metal frame that psp 2000 does not.. lcd of psp 1000 is much thicker compared to psp 2000, which makes it durable.. though it made the psp 2000 brighter compared to psp 1000.i guess it made much heavier though
Written by Guest on 2008-03-19 06:36:53
this thing was awesome
MAN
Can you give some advice?
Written by Guest on 2008-03-13 08:39:05

Will wait for touch screen
Written by Guest on 2008-03-11 13:30:25
I have the 1001 but I was hoping that the 2000 would include a touch screen or an add-on (USB port)so you could use the web browser or email a lot faster

Written by Guest on 2008-03-09 20:57:59
you all talk bout pros and cons,y buy a psp if you want to plug it in your tv?
y not buy NOT portable console.fat or slim, small difference though. got grip in the old one and got light on the new one.thats y sony did that for business mainly but to have a choice for buyers respond to comfort.
Both are Good!
Written by Guest on 2008-03-09 17:34:39
Both are good in their own ways and this discussion is getting old! if you're new to PSP then get a slim. if u like more portabilty then go for slim. im getting the daxter pack and my original's (not fat or phat retards!) analog stick broke and sony wouldn't give me a refurb. remeber, this isn't comp. between the two like DS vs. PSP.im gonna have a original that half works aND A FULLY FUNCTIonal slim! GO Launch owners!!!
Fat PSP is better
Written by Guest on 2008-02-14 20:57:00
I think the older psp is better because if you were to have the new one in your pocket you would have a better chance of it getting stolen because you will forget that it was in your pocket, and with the old psp it is built tighter, and I like the weight of it because it feels more valuable
Psp slim WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better, no ques
Written by Guest on 2008-02-11 19:04:03
Whoever had the idea the psp 1000 is better, also the grip on the psp slim is good too, u can still be butter fingers to hold and play with slim psp
sony psp
Written by Guest on 2008-02-09 14:04:20
i think that the psp slim is alot better because it looks good and is much lighter
Psp slims better!
Written by Guest on 2008-01-22 14:34:06

Gaming grip
Written by Guest on 2007-12-27 16:58:34
Hi, I am wanting to purchase a PSP but am unsure on whether to go for the original or slim version. One of my mates told me that the original is far better in terms of grip and comfort. He said that the new version is completely flat at the back and does not have the "grip" of the original. Is this true?? Can anyone help me please!?

Thanks
fat definitely better. no argument
Written by Guest on 2007-12-27 08:36:49
all u guys are talking about is nonsense. if u have CFW on a fat then u are set.u dont need to buy another game again. also slim is incapable of running the 1.50 kernel simply meaning no homebrew. and speaking of speed it isnt that much of a difference especially if uadjust the cpu to 333MHZ . i actually listen to my own music while playing games using irshell on my fat psp and i have had no freezes as long as i run at 333MHZ.
psp
Written by Guest on 2007-12-26 20:35:10
i don't know wat to get know i read all the comments i'm thinking of still geting the slim but i'm butter fingers so i might get the original but it cost more money and i'm low on cash
Best thing evar

Flash Drive.

Slim flash drive have more memory than Phat, which gave it more room for updates.
no component cable for psp-1001
Written by Guest on 2007-12-23 08:04:01
There is no component cable for the psp-1001. That's one of the new features on the PSP-2000, which wasn't available in the first model PSP.
Component AV Cable for PSP-1001 is this

hey! i heard that there is video output for the old psp...is it true? i like my psp and i dont plan on gettin the slim but i really would love to use it on the tv...
slim
Written by Guest on 2007-12-19 17:57:24
slim is the way to go if you don't have a psp already. if you got one, then stick with it...
:)
slim is better!
Written by Guest on 2007-12-17 17:57:15
the slim may break easier than the old one, but everything else about it is better! if you like homebrew, then get custom firmware, the homebrew is actually better on the slim because of the doubled ram. and some people said they dont like silver, but theres a piano black psp slim too, i have it and its amazing, i like it way better than my old one :)
Happy with PSP Slim
Written by Guest on 2007-12-17 09:06:46
Hey everyone. This is Alexis. Thanks for your comments and feedback. Just thought I'd share some feedback with my experience on the PSP Slim so far. It's worked great. Nothing has broken. I've been using it regularly, but not roughing it up. No problems with the UMD door or memory card. I actually carry it around my pocket more than the older PSP. Slimming it down and reducing the weight made a difference in taking it around. I have the silver version you see there. I highly recommend it. Great for using at public wireless access points. Hope they get that internet radio in there this week! I haven't used the video out feature much, other than to enjoy the God of War demo on the big screen. You'll want to do that, if you're at home playing Chains of Olympus. Thought I'd update you on my experience. I did sell the PSP-1000. Let me know if you have any other questions on it!

Written by Guest on 2007-11-16 18:39:32
alright take a look at this..the PS2 was awsome at first and then they came out with the PS2 slim, then it was about the same...if u really look closely the psp1000 isnt much bigger than the 2000 but the 2000 comes in 2 different colors and has better graphics, as well as the fact that u gte a game and a movie in the bundle...there ws none of that with the reg PSP.....SLIM BABY!!!!!

great review!
Really Great Review!!!
Written by Guest on 2007-10-21 03:00:06
This is a great review. Thanks you for taking the time to write this up. I agree with every that the original feels much sturdier. I've played and seen the slim version and there isn't much of a difference. Besides the video output everything is about the same. I rather stick to my slightly heavier but sturdy old psp.
game sharing
Written by Guest on 2007-10-19 01:25:48
can an old psp communicate with psp slim like game sharing??

Age old reliance
Written by Guest on 2007-10-05 12:11:12
I personally don't see enough of a reason to dish out extra cash just to get a slightly less durable model of what I already have. I've had my beast of a PSP for nigh on four years now, and I've never once had a problem with it, even with it's high speed relationship with the floor (yes, I've dropped it repeatedly, and it's still kickin'.) I have a strange inkling that shaving off weight is also shaving off system life, especially for those with butterfingers like me. However, if my device does eventually bite the big one, I might go for the slim version, only if they still have the special package, because another 1gb memory stick would be nice to have. But, in retrospect, I might not be able to keep playing my ps1 games on it, the reason I have a pocket full of 2gig's and a pair of 4gig's. Oh well...

i think il get a psp 2000. my psp is prety banged up and i was thinking of trading it in to buy a new one anyway. im guessing the tv out is to boost the sales of umd movies. if umds actualy supported surround sounds and you can out it to the hd tv, a whole new purpose comes to the umd video sales. about the memory card slot, how many times to you have to change your memory stick, cause i dont often with a 2 gig stick, so the change is good. i think on the most part sony is going in the right direction but they shoulda waited a bit more. i cant wait to import my flash videos to this new psp2000, cause the psp 1000 didnt have anought power to play .swf and i do my share of flash development. if the psp2000 has all the previous psp1000 function and more at the price of 199$can then this is a very good buy. i know im trading mine in for a psp2000.
Written by Guest on 2007-09-29 15:25:21
i love my PSP normal and is not heavy at all and PSP slim does not have homebrew psp
slim is good but I'll stick with
my PSP 1000

i think they should make a vid cable fer the psp 1000 and did u guys know that the internal of the psp 1000 had extra stuff inside to protect the screen from drops and stuff.(as in stuff i mean stuff inside for durablilty)and now the psp 2000 dont got that...so im waiting for how poor the durablility of the psp slilm is...sony i expected better from u guys...
What's up with the av component cable f
Written by Guest on 2007-09-20 20:36:39
Hey, what's up with the av component cable that only works with the new one? Also what about the old? I mean, why can the original PSP have a av cable that can hook up to a TV where you can play your video games, watch your fav. movies, listen to your MP3's, share photos with others and other stuff. They shouldn't create a new one just to do that. It makes me and others that still have the old one that would love to enjoy our PSP stuff on a big screen. GIVE THE OLD ONE A BREAK!!!!!!
Written by Guest on 2007-09-18 15:00:27
I traded my old PSP with additional money to get the new. I regret it so much. The new PSP feels very fragile and the material it is made from is cheap plastic. The reason why it is light. The original felt and was of higher quality. I am going to buy back my old PSP and pay additional amount- I feel like a fool for trading it.
fun
Written by Guest on 2007-09-18 10:02:19
but u know something psp old is better in playing bcuz its heavy and heavier things are more fun too play
forgot to add
Written by Guest on 2007-09-18 02:53:40
the new psp also have more themes than compare to the old one, if u are comparing video contrast juz a more reminder that the psp slim colour wil also fade alittle in times to come, about the battery life i am also quite unsure of what it meant
Written by Guest on 2007-09-17 22:20:53
I like the old 1 better, more solid! my games r on memory so the Slim's fastest load time is not even close. I pass Slim and wait until a new PSP with a hard disk.
Better, faster, lighter , Stronger PSP s
Written by Guest on 2007-09-17 05:57:17
When l first got my psp skin l thought it felt "cheap" but now after having it for a week I Love it, much lighter and brighter screen, plus you defiantly notice the load times are much shorter. Both the phat and slim are good, but in case your wondering the slim is Better faster. Stronger! '!
battery life
Written by Guest on 2007-09-16 22:43:01
as mentioned above the battery is slimmer and is 1200mAh vs 1800mAh on the origninal. Whats does this mean for play time? Is play time 1/3 less? or is the slim more efficent and consume less power? My guess would be not since the screen is brighter.
Slim?
Written by Guest on 2007-09-16 04:37:32
Dunno if it's just me but I really can't see much of a difference. Not enough to justify trading in my old one anyway. All this talk of carrying a brick around is nonsense. The old PSP may be heavier, but it feels sturdy and well built, very much unlike a rival handheld I could mention. I'll be sticking with my 1st gen SPP I think :)
Looks Good!
Written by Guest on 2007-09-16 01:30:20
I'll get it because of the better video quality and faster load time.
