A report from Sony Corp in Tokyo said that the Sony PSP Slim (or PSP-2000) has sold 550,000 units in Japan for the month of September. The debut of the Sony PSP Slim reached better sales than the original PlayStation Portable did, even back in the PSP's debut in December 2004.
The newer PSP features video output, faster loading time, lighter weight and a more compact profile, as well as a variety of colors (black, silver and white) and branding (Spiderman red and Simpsons yellow in the UK, Star Wars Darth Vader branded in the US). See a photographic comparison here of the new PSP Slim to the original PSP, where you can see a reduced battery size and components in the UMD door contribute to the slimmer factor. We'll see soon enough if the Sony PSP Slim had better sales in the US when the September NPD numbers are released. The PSP Piano Black Core ($169.99) and Sony PSP Ice Silver Daxter Entertainment Pack ($199) are currently available in the US. The Ceramic White PSP Bundle with Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron ($199.99) will be available next week, on October 9th, if you prefer your PSP Slim with Darth Vader on it. From Reuters
