In an effort to boost sales of the PS3, Sony Corp. today announced price cuts on the console in Japan. Following last week's announcement of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's 40GB PS3, Japan will also be getting the a reduced feature PS3 to bring savings to the consumer. The 40GB PS3 will go for 39,980 yen ($341) in Japan on November 11.
The 40 GB PS3 model, according to specs announced in last week's SCEE annnouncement, will have 2 USB ports (down from the previous 4), no memory card ports and no backwards compatibility. For the first time, the PS3 will be available in a white color in Japan. Japan's current 20GB Playstation 3 will go for 44,980 yen ($384), down from 49,980 yen ($426), starting October 17. The 60GB PS3 will also be going for less, at 54,980 yen ($469), down from about 60,000 yen ($512). No word on plans for the US Playstation 3, but we'll post an update once Sony Computer Entertainment America makes an announcement. The 40GB PS3 is rumored to be appearing in the end of October 2007.
