It's clear that even with the late month entry of the Xbox 360's Halo 3, it had a significant impact on the industry for the month of September 2007. The NPD Group has released the September 2007 video game sales numbers, revealing Halo 3 registers a bit over 3 million units sold. The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) had a boost in sales with the debut of the PSP Slim. The Wii still manages to sell a little over 500,000 consoles, without any major game launches for the platform or pricing changes in September.

Here's the breakdown for you to digest as you prefer:

September NPD game console sales (units):
1: Xbox 360 - 527K
2: Wii - 501K
3: DS - 495K
4: PSP - 284K
5: PS2 - 215K
6: PS3 - 119K
7: GBA - 75K

September NPD Top 10 Software Sales (units):
1: Halo 3 (standard, limited and legendary editions) - Xbox 360: 3.3 million
2: Wii Play - Wii: 282K
3: Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - DS: 224K
4: Madden NFL 08 - PS2: 205K
5: Skate - Xbox 360: 175K
6: Madden NFL 08 - Xbox 360: 173K
7: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Wii: 167K
8: BioShock - Xbox 360: 150K
9: Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day - DS: 141K
10: Heavenly Sword - PS3: 139K

It was a pretty rough month for the PS3 in September, but with the recent reduced pricing announcement of the Playstation 3 80GB ($499), October should see a boost in Playstation 3 sales.
