Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) issued a response to a story posted at Gamed.nl (which is now removed from the site), claiming a 40% failure rate of new 40GB PS3 consoles.
Here's the statement issued by SCEE on the rumor: “We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story,” said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.” This pretty much kills the rumor, if you come across it on the internet or in forums. I won't deny that the PS3 has been sturdy as a tank and no where near the failure rates reported with the Xbox 360. The newer Xbox 360s hardware configurations seem to have resolved the issue, but based on the replies at the Xbox 360 Repair Status posting, there still are quite a few ticked off gamers.
