The new slimmer PSP is faring well in Japan. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) is reporting that the new slimmer, lighter and video output capable PSP has sold 1 million units in the region. The PSP Slim has been available in Japan since September 20th, in which it sold about 550,000 units during the debut month.
Sales of the PSP Slim are about half that in the US. In the US, sales of the PSP were about 284,000 units in September and about 286,000 units in October (according to NPD numbers). How many of those units are the PSP-1000 (original PSP) in comparison to the Slim PSP sales is unknown. While it's doing better than the Playstation 3 in the US, it still has quite a fight to put up to reach Nintendo's DS sales.
In the US, there are three PSP Slim (PSP-2000) models currently available: The PSP (PlayStation Portable) Deep Red Value Pack and PSP (PlayStation Portable) Deep Red 1 Seg Pack will be available in Japan on December 13th. From SCEI
NEW SLIM AND LIGHT PSP® (PLAYSTATION®PORTABLE) Tokyo, November 26, 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the sales of its new slim and light PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) handheld entertainment system had reached a total of 1 million units(*1) in Japan as of November 22, 2007. This remarkable milestone was achieved in only 2 months from its launch on September 20, and tracking 2 weeks faster in pace than the original PSP launched in December 2004. The new slim and light PSP offers more convenience in portability and more choice in colors to match users’ lifestyle. The newly added “1 Seg” TV viewing feature(*2) on its 4.3 inch high resolution LCD screen, an overwhelmingly large screen for a handheld device, has also become the driver in attracting more and a broader range of users. Strong sales still continues after 2 months from launch, underpinning the acceleration of the expansion of the PSP platform.
