Playstation 3 Tops Wii Sales In Japan For The First Time PDF Print E-mail

A sign of things to come or a fluke? The Playstation 3 outsold the Wii in Japan for the first time since both console launched a year ago. It wasn't by a huge margin. November console sales for the Playstation 3 were 183,217 units, while the Wii sold 159,193 units. A likely contributor to the boost of sales? The debut of the new lower cost Playstation 3 40 GB model, for 39,980 yen ($341). The white Playstation 3 started selling in Japan on November 11th. Force feedback (aka rumble) also returned to Japan's PS3s in November with the release of the DualShock 3 Playstation 3 controller. We'll have to see if the US PS3 sales show a significant jump once November NPD numbers are released. The PlayStation 3 40GB Spider-Man Movie Pack bundle became available in the US on November 2, 2007.

Short lived?

"PS3 momentum will be short-lived. We have seen similar pattern everytime after the price cut."

That statement might be short sighted. With great games finally coming out (like UT3, Haze, LBP and further in the future, MGS4, FFXIII, White Knight Story, as well as many others) we might just see the PS3 start to close the gap.
Just a hiccup

From this weekend, Wii regained the momentum again at most of retailers. PS3 momentum will be short-lived. We have seen similar pattern everytime after the price cut.
Well - sooner or later.

The big question on this is how many consoles of each type were available. Nintendo still has supply problems. So, did stores sell out or did Nintendo finally get ahead of the market? When stores have a constant inventory of Wii consoles like the PS3 and XBox, then it will really be head-to-head sales. As long as Nintendo is selling 100% of what they produce, regardless of total number sold, they are the real winner financially.

I think PS3's time is almost due. XBox got it's really big wave by being first. Wii got theirs by being different. PS3 will get theirs next for, well, being the PS3.

Sooner or later, some of the gamers who have had their Wii's for over a year will be buying the PS3. Like many people, I've been waiting for the price to come down and will probably buy one during the next round of promos after xmas. It's cool - just not that many $$ worth of cool.
