Beats Hits PSP; A Rhythm Game To Your Own Music For $5 PDF Print E-mail

Beats is a "game" that hit the PSP's online Playstation Store this week (here). It's essentially a rhythm game that uses beat tracking technology to allow you use your own music stored on the PSP's memory card. You play it the way you would play other rhythm games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band or Dance Dance Revolution. Hit the PSP's buttons at the right time and use the "overdrive" mode to multiply the points. But Beats is practically two games, or interactive experiences, in one. A "My Music Challenge" mode and a "Jamming" mode are the two main modes of play.

In the My Music Challenge, the PSP looks in your memory stick's music folder for tracks to play. There are four levels of difficulty, from Novice to Extreme. A sequence of buttons to hit appears on the screen, matched to the beat of the music. Some music seems to work better than others. Check out a quick sampling of the My Music Challenge to "Enjoy The Silence" in the video below. There are plenty of different backgrounds and visual effects to choose from in the "visualizer" to keep things fresh. Beats is worth it just for this mode alone, but there's another fun mode of play. Jamming Mode.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero games can take a cue from Beats' included "Jamming" mode. It's a sampler/mixer where you compose tracks, from different artists. There are 11 different tracks to select from. This is probably where a lot of the download weight came from (237MB). You can set various vocal, percussion, drum, bass, guitar and synth tracks, to name a few. Remind you of Mixman? You can even record, save and share your remixes online.

Beats also allows you to customize the main menu music and background video to a style that suits you. Select from styles such as rock, funk, trance and urban. Local (ad-hoc) multiplayer is support as well, so you can compete with other friends.

For $4.99, it's a great deal and should be part of your PSP's permanent collection. This is the most unique, and well priced, download to hit the Playstation Store. See a quick 30 second video below of the "My Music Challenge" mode, where you can see how it plays with Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence."

Beats is a great game to have on the memory stick in case you get bored of your UMD game and don't feel like digging through your carry-on for another. If they post more games likt this on the store a 4GB card will soon become a must.
