Nintendo/GameStop To Guarantee Wiis in January; Wii To Be In Stock This and Next Weekend PDF Print E-mail

Still looking for a Nintendo Wii? Finding a Wii in stock this season has been just as tough as last year's holiday season. Today, Nintendo announced that it is offering a "rain check" program in an exclusive partnership with GameStop to deliver Wii consoles in January. You'll have to pay $249.99 on December 21st or December 22nd at GameStop to be eligible.

From Reuters: "Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told a telephone news conference that shoppers who pay the full price of about $249 for an out-of-stock Wii on December 20 and 21 at retailer GameStop Corp will get a certificate promising a Wii "sometime in January."

If you're still gambling on getting a Wii before Christmas time and the end of 2007, you will want to keep a close lookout on retailers such as Best Buy, Sears and Wal-Mart (maybe Circuit City and Target too). Word is there will be shipments and stock of Wii consoles this weekend and the last weekend before Christmas. Don't wait until you have the Sunday ad circulars at hand!

If worse comes to worse and you're really desperate, you can always give WiiAlerts.com a try. Use them at your own discretion. They promise to track inventory and alert you via cellphone text message that Wiis are in-stock. I did contact them for an interview, but they pretty much wanted to remain anonymous (to focus on site's content/function). They asked me to speak to previous users who were able to get a Wii using their inventory tracking system. I did look through various sites to see message posts, and success seems to be mixed (as well as reliability of privacy).

Watch GamingBits.com, as we're always keeping lookout and will be getting an alert from Amazon.com when Wii consoles are in stock again.

UPDATE: WiiAlerts.com issued a response to the "reliability of privacy" comment. They did mention they were concerned about it and took it seriously. They pointed to the following thread on slickdeals.net. Make your own judgment and decide if you would like to use their service with your own firsthand experience.
