Looking For Rock Band PS2 Special Edition? Get PS3 SE Bundle & PS2 Game. PDF Print E-mail

Looks like Harmonix/MTV/EA was cutting it close to Christmas in releasing Rock Band for the PS2 this week. Judging by the searches on the site and various emails I've received, it's tough to find. To compare it to Guitar Hero III's sales when it was released in November, the PS2 version of GH3 outsold the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii versions, making it #4 on the top 10 game sales for November 2007. To get back to Rock Band, the demand for it on the PS2 is probably much bigger than the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. There is a larger base of PS2 gamers, after all. So that puts some tough odds at finding the Rock Band PS2 Special Edition. But there is a workaround.

Order the Playstation 3 Rock Band Special Edition and the Rock Band PS2 stand-alone game. Both are easier to find than the Rock Band Special Edition for PS2 (and were available at the time of this writing on Amazon.com). The bundle comes with a sealed copy of Rock Band for the PS3, which you can sell to recoup the cost of the $47.99 PS2 stand-alone version. If the PS3 version doesn't come with a USB hub (360 version does), you will also need to use a 4-port USB hub or get the official Rock Band one.

As the press release from MTV Games states: "The Rock Band Special Edition Bundle for the PlayStation 2 system features a wireless Fender Stratocaster guitar controller, an electronic drum kit, real drum sticks, a microphone and software and has a suggested retail price of $159.99. Standalone Rock Band software for the PlayStation 2 system is also available for the suggested retail price of $49.99. Rock Band for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 use the same instruments so players do not need to buy new instruments if they upgrade their console."

Using that workaround, it'll be much cheaper than bidding on a Rock Band PS2 special edition on eBay and will get it to you in time for Christmas.

If you want to get your hands on it in time for Christmas without having too much of a hassle tracking the PS2 version of the bundle, that may be the best way. I did verify it with MTV Games, but it's there on the press release as well.

The Mic won't work! I have Ps2/Ps3 instruments, and Ps2 game. No matter what I do. I attempted to edit In-Game settings, nada. I've plugeged in ViPowER USB 2.0 4-Port HUB, it doesn't work. It registers that the Mic is available to play, and then states that it needs to be plugged in!!
Arghh, it's been three days, everything says 'plug a controller into the port along with the mic but no matter where i plug it, nothing works. I even checked to see if the microphone had to be switched, somewhere in the area in which you'd switch to your headset for ps3 live. NOthing.
HELP!
What to do

My son has a PS2. He wants Rock Band. I keep hearing PS3 Rock Band is better. Is there something wrong with the PS2 version? Would he be able to enjoy the game on the PS2? What do I need to buy? Please advise.

Comment #2. You must have missed the part about the 4 port usb hub. that will turn 1 usb plug into 4. so you can have up to 8 usb devices plugged into a ps2.
Get a 4-port USB hub

I'm not sure if the PS3 version comes with it (360 one does), but you may need a 4-port USB hub to have it work on there. Since the PS3 has 4-ports, Harmonix may not include a hub. You can either get one on your own 4-port hub or use the Rock Band USB hub.

I quickly tested it, and the guitar works. My only concern is how do I get three items (guitar, mic, & Drums) to work with only two USB ports on the PS2. Maybe a multi tap?
Confirmed also

Hi, Just wanted to let you know it was confirmed by someone who just did this on the comments here.
The Workaround
Written by Guest on 2007-12-20 18:34:55
I've done exactly as stated:

1) Purchased the PS2 Game only edition at Amazon - approximately $56 for two day shipping.

2) Purchased the PS3 Special Edition at Walmart for $169.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will work come Christmas morning !!
