Toshio Iwai, a media artist from Japan and the creator of the limited Nintendo DS title Electroplankton, continues his musical exploration with light, sound and touch. His collaboration with Yahama has produced a new instrument: the Tenori-On. Toshio Iwai says the Tenori-On was developed with "particular attention being given to the beauty of the light & sounds, the ease of performance, and as a musical instrument of the future." The Tenori-On features a 16x16 LED button matrix. There are six modes of performance and sound/light: Score Mode, Random Mode, Draw Mode, Bounce Mode, Push Mode, and Solo Mode. Compositions are made of "Layers" and "Blocks". The 2006 Nintendo DS release of Electroplankton uses 10 play modes (or Electroplankton creatures) that respond to touch and clapping via the DS mic. By interacting with the various plankton-like creatures, different music can be created. While the DS interactive title (it's not a game, after all) may be out of print and be going for about double its original cost on eBay, it's no where near the cost of the Tenori-On. The Tenori-On was offered in a limited test market in the UK for £599.00 (about $1,200 USD). Artist like Bjork have used the Tenori-On during live performances. Check out samples and more info on the Tenori-On here. See the official Electroplankton website here. From Destructoid and Yamaha
