If there is one thing that the Xbox 360 has going against it in the high-def movie war, it's the exclusion of an internal HD-DVD drive. While the Playstation 3 comes with a Blu-ray player as a standard in its Playstation 3 40GB or 80GB bundles, there's currently no internal HD-DVD player in any of the Xbox 360 models (
Arcade
,
Pro
or
Elite
bundles). Adding the HD-DVD drive to the Xbox 360 costs $179.99. Rumor is that may change at the upcoming 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2008). With the 2008 show being the last appearance from Bill Gates, word is he and Robbie Bach are expected to make an announcement on the Xbox 360 HD DVD configuration.
An article at Seattle Times states: "In particular, Microsoft could work with Toshiba to develop a digital video recorder with a hard-drive, high-definition HD-DVD drive and Xbox gaming capabilities. They're already allied against Sony and other backers of the Blu-ray DVD format, and Toshiba could help Xbox finally penetrate the Japanese market. Microsoft could also make a splash by announcing plans to give the Xbox 360 an internal HD-DVD drive, putting it on par with Sony's PlayStation 3 that has a built-in Blu-ray drive." Of course, no official statements from Microsoft yet. We'll keep a lookout in the week ahead. From The Seattle Times via QJ.net
