Good news for Sony's Playstation 3, not so great news for the Xbox 360's HD DVD player. Add Warner Bros to the Blu-ray HD exclusivity list. The studio has chosen to go HD exclusive on Blu-ray discs. Warner Bros publishing on HD DVD will end in May 2008, with their releases continuing on Blu-ray and standard DVD.
From the Reuters report:
"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement. Will the rumored "Ultimate Xbox 360" be able to make it in time to make a difference (if the internal HD DVD drive becomes a reality)? See the Warner Bros HD DVD and Blu-ray listing here on the Warner Bros website. UPDATE 1/5/08: Looks like the HD DVD Promotional Group just cancelled its CES party.
Toshiba issued the following statement/press release following Warner Bros decision: We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007. We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer. " From Reuters
