The original Turbo Grafx 16 version had bad graphics, no save mode (write down this code to continue), and not much to really explore. Hudson Entertainment is recreating Dungeon Explorer for the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS with Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Ancient Arts. The general graphics are decent (see a few screenshots below), even with the magic effects coming across a bit cartoonish on the DS. The original version supported up to four players with the TurboTap. In this release of the dungeon crawl, the PSP supports up to 2 friends via the PSP Ad-hoc.
The inventory and mapping appear to have been given a fair amount of attention. The weapons and armor are upgradable. There is an extensive talent system, “150 different kinds of fighting arts, including Big Bang Arts” for the PSP and “more than 60 different fighting arts across 8 lost Ancient Fighting Art schools” for the DS. John Greiner, President and CEO states, “Bringing a classic franchise like Dungeon Explorer to the handheld gaming systems of today continues Hudson’s pledge to deliver engaging new content to gamers, while tapping into the nostalgia of the popular series.” He also remarked that, “Dungeon Explorer updates the much loved series with an all-new engaging story and introduces new RPG game play elements never before seen in a handheld game.” It appears that more effort went into the PSP version with its better rendering, enhanced ability system and polarity style (think Crystal Chronicles?) Big Bang Arts, but both versions focus on the customizable, multiplayer experience. Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Ancient Arts is scheduled to be available February 2008.
