New Playstation 3 120GB or 160GB Model Coming? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rivithed

More rumors are spreading on possible new Playstation 3 HDD configurations. Previous rumors from within Best Buy and GameStop say the Playstation 3 80GB Motorstorm bundle is on the way out. Another rumor, this one from Ars Technica's Opposable Thumbs, is saying what the 80GB's replacement will be.

From Arstechnica.com: "The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller... "

Its nearing the spring season, when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) said the Playstation 3's Dualshock 3 would be released in the US, so the timing sounds on target.

With all this hard drive swapping going on with the Playstation 3 models, keep in mind it's just as easy to upgrade the Playstation 3 internal hard drive on your own. Sony may be on to a fifth HDD configuration for the Playstation 3. So far they've released a 20, 40, 60 and 80 GB model. You'd think a 100GB Playstation 3 model would be next in line with the pattern of 20GB increments we've seen. Arstechnica.com's anonymous source is saying it will be as high as 160GB this time. There's been no official announcement from Sony.

Backward compatability
Written by Guest on 2008-10-03 17:06:13
I have always had the sony console, & was looking forward to getting the PS3, to have the new games & also play the old games from the PS2 on 1 console. The geniuses at Sony decided to discontinue the 80GB & put out the 40GB which is not backward compatible.... How much of the market do you think you lost with that great idea. As I was not going to be able to play the old games, the kids decided they wanted the XBOX 360, as it had a wider range of games, & guess what, backward compatability. I may think about getting the new PS3 when they finally decide to bring it out, but by then, who knows, may not be worth it..... I hope the genius at Sony who made the decision is looking for another job, should be after such a monumental stuff up like they made. I know you make more money out of the games, but when a new console comes out & has barely any to play.... Thats why you have backward compatability!!!
BACKWARDS COMPABILITY

So, guess what? My kids 40gb sytems hard drive is corrupted and will no longer work. So I take it back to the store and get a full refund. I'm thinking thats ok, because I unkowningly at the time bought the "crap" version. So now I go shopping for the 80bg system and they tell me It's been discontinued. I'm not buying it again. I want to play my old ps one and two games. The people who market this product really screwed up. Now my kids want an X-Box. I'm debaiting............. Dad.

Sony
Written by Guest on 2008-07-08 11:15:36
I'm still waiting for my PS3, what's funny is they say the 40GB has limited compatibility with PS2, and the 60/80GB has "full" compatibility. Define full. Sony is just trying to milk the market, because they know they lost to Nintendo and Microsoft. They might have won the DVD format war, but really no one cares about blu-ray or HD. who pays 35 bucks for a DVD when they can get the same DVD for 20 bucks. So to Sony I say, stop with the game, the more you play around with customers, the better chance you have your customers becoming pissed off and just not bothering with your products.

I'getting really agravated with ps3 makers. I got the 40g ps3 and the people at futureshop said it was backwards compatable. So I got it and about 15 days later I try a ps2 game. Guess what it doesn't work. So I go to return it and they give me a store credit. Okay great but its to bad that they don't have any 80 or 60 gigs cuz there discontinued. So now I have to wait for the 120 or 160 gig which might not even be backward compatible. So now I'm realllllyyy pist off thanks alot ps3 makers for not making thing backward compatible.
backward combatabillity

they really should have put in big bold red print on the front of the box that the 40 gig did not have this feature. seeing as how the stupid ass kid behind the counter of target told us it would play ps2 games. it's been well over 30 days and now I'm finding out that the 80 gig is nolonger available. thats just lovely. not to mention I'm out the $20 bucks I spent on the stupid game sure glad it wasn't a new game. I'm so so mad!
How much is it?

I do find this funny. First off, I think the language is ridiculous. Grow up guys. Second, Sony has lost format wars repeatidly in the past due to the same reasons we are now experiencing. Guess what, the original Blu Ray players will not play the current Blu Ray discs. Sony has a way of putting something on the shelf before they finish it, and we pay. Also, they have always focused on having proprietary equipment. Remember BETA, MiniDisc, Memory Stick... Funny that Sony never licensed those, and they died. They did license the Blu-Ray, though they NEVER finalized the Standard. Watch out for this attitude. I love Sony because they are on the Bleeding edge of GREAT Technology; it's too bad the suits don't focus on the engineering instead of Shareholder value... Sony would actually dominate. I am going to continue my support of Wii and Myamoto (SP?) because they care first about the quality of the Gaming Experience, and then their share value. Remember, you vote with your money as to who lives and who dies. Either way, I wish you well and that the answers become clear.

ps3 120gb

There Bring it out in the spring this year, there just building up units at the moemtn so they can sell millions
compatibility.....
Written by Guest on 2008-03-10 08:35:55
Sony really needs to think about this one. To be releasing a 5th system is not warranted unless it is fully backwards compatible. I'm not one to have a whole shelf of systems so i can play games. Sony should be looking to the consumer and giving them the full compatible system they want. i for one am hunting for a 60gb system online as it is the only one that will play everything. Sony said the 60 was to expensive to produce........after 3 botched systems in the 20, 40 and 80 gb size........shouldn't they have learned by now?? All this is going to do is cause unrest amongst the people buying the systems. I could care less about the dual shock 3 controller.....just give me something i can play all my games on and millions like myself can play happy.

any body that would pay 500usd or more for a ps3 has too much time on their hands and needs to get a job.
Written by Guest on 2008-03-04 12:54:10
No matter what you buy in electronics, you can never really have the best. Cause by the time something is released there's already a better prototype being tested. I have the 80gb PS3 and love it! I have a service plan on it and am waiting to swap it out because of network problems but I dont want the damn 40gb. The new Dualshock 3 controller will be a nice touch though.
Do we really need big HDDs?
Written by Guest on 2008-02-17 19:48:15
Let's play games... let's get BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY. I could give a hoot if you have me a 1000000 TB model. I will only use it for gaming. Come on Sony. With Netflix doing away with HD-DVD, I think you finally won the format war, so stop screwing us around.
when the hell is it gona come out?
Written by Guest on 2008-02-17 12:40:49
I'm really f#$ken pissed right I just returned my 80GB ps3 cause it was having promblems I think it was used it had about 16 scratches and I bought it from futureshop what the hell so gay I got so mad that my dad was like don't worry I'll buy you the highest HD model and by the way I went to best buy also and the electronic guy told me that a sony representative came a few days ago and he told him there coming with a 120GB model in 1 or 2 months dam so pissed can't wait to get that 120GB so long to wait hopefully it has a better software for ps2 games for backwards compatability :(:(:(:D
Make only one type of console form !
Written by Guest on 2008-02-14 17:10:14
People want the best and latesting technology. Why does Sony/PS3 creators need to make these situatuion diffucult. Look at nitendo they made five consoles because it was one ganeration of gaming after another. Now there is only one type of Wii form and you dont miss out on features. This also goes for the XBOX 360 company making the halo edition, elite, and other forms or type of 360. I already bought a PS3 now wat buy another one. You are fucking kidding !
pisses me off
