Capcom Blog Responds To Devil May Cry 4 Install Time On Playstation 3 PDF Print E-mail

On the eve of the release of Devil May Cry 4, there's been quite a stir on the 'net about Devil May Cry 4 on the Playstation 3. If you own both a Playstation 3 and an Xbox 360, you've probably been torn between which version to get. I know I have. Capcom has done a great job in keeping the visuals balanced on both platforms. Look at the comparison video and there's not much to compare. After trying the demo on both versions as well, the differences were barely, if at all, noticeable. It's almost like the HD DVD video quality to Blu-ray video quality debate.

So what's the latest stir? The 20-some minute install time on the Playstation 3. CVG is reporting the mandatory 5 Gig install doesn't provide any considerable in-game loading difference from the Xbox 360 version.

Capcom's Chris "Kramez" Kramer has responded to the grumbling of the install time on its Community Blog:
"Wah! The game takes 20 minutes to install the first time. Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren’t making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click “Yes!” on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes."

Joking aside, he does note there is also a benefit to the install time:

"While the game is loading, you get to watch a really nifty series of screens that completely catch you up on the DMC4 backstory. Think of it as compressing the last three “seasons” into a single info blast, accompanied by some fantastic DMC artwork. It’s great for those new to the series and also a good refresher to serious fans (you can also check out all these screens again later in the Library mode)."

The install process isn't a deal breaker for me. While I'm eagerly awaiting my pre-order of the Playstation 3 Collector's Edition version, maybe I'll watch an episode of Devil May Cry: The Animated Series on my Xbox 360 or flip through the art book during the install. Whichever platform you choose, enjoy Devil May Cry 4.

it really took some kinda 25 minutes. i'd like to see side-by-side numbers on 360 load times, because it does load quicker than most games. still, that's a lot of space on any ps3 standard hard drive.

this just points out the weakness of the ps3, even with the advanced blu-ray and cell processor, they have to load 5 gigs of info, on the drive to get comparable proformance witht he 360, looks like the 360 512megs of memory really does make a difference after all

Who cares if it takes 22 minutes to install???? It's not like you have to do it every time you play the game.
Poor programming

It doesn't take 22 minutes to copy a mere 5GB off of a Blu-Ray disc; at raw data rate we're talking at most nine minutes. And if the data is being decompressed into a 5GB area on the hard disc, even less data would be read from the optical disc. (Disregard any decompression overhead, since the CPUs have nothing else to do).

This is just sloppy and pathetic.
