It's the end of the short-lived era for HD-DVD. A report from Japanese National TV NHK is saying that Toshiba "has decided to withdraw from next generation high-definition DVD production." The high-definition DVD format only went tumbling since the Warner Bros. announcement to go Blu-ray only, with Walmart recently deciding to carry Blu-ray as their HD format as well.
From NHK in Japan: "The company said it will continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while but will stop further development of HD DVD. Meanwhile, it said its DVD factories in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, would be closed. Market observers said that Toshiba could suffer a loss of hundreds of millions of US dollars." Toshiba has not made a public announcement yet. Microsoft recently dropped the price of the external HD DVD drive to $129.99 MSRP from $179.99. Good thing it is an external piece of hardware. With the format pretty much left to go unsupported, it's bound to be cleared out eventually. So when is the fire sale of HD DVDs? UPDATE 2/18/08: Toshiba stated on Monday that it "has not made any announcement or decision" on HD DVD. The HD saga continues, if just for a bit more. Read more on Engadget. UPDATE 2 (2/18/08): Engadget has another update stating that an announcement from Toshiba is expected tomorrow. UPDATE (2/19/08): Toshiba has formally announced the discontinuation of HD DVD.
