With HD DVD out of the picture, where is Microsoft to go with HD movies on its Xbox 360? A lot of the talk from Xbox 360 side seems to be digital downloads via its Xbox 360 Video Marketplace, or saying the focus of the Xbox 360 is on gaming. The latest word from Financial Times says Sony Electronics is currently in talks with Microsoft on bringing a Blu-ray drive to the Xbox 360. Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said talks were currently ongoing with Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.
From the article at FT.com: "The Sony president said he did not believe Blu-ray would be overtaken by high-definition content becoming available over the internet. Bandwidth limitations meant it was still available to only a few, he said, and consumers favoured disks they could own. “Downloading will build over time, but this will be over a period of years,” said Stan Glasgow. FT.com contacted Microsoft, but they declined to comment. The article also noted that Sony Electronics could drop its blu-ray players to $299 by end of this year and $200 by the end of 2009. UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed that it will be supporting Blu-ray. No details on a possible Xbox 360 blu-ray release yet, but device drivers are in the works for Windows. See more here at Spong.com.
