A BD-Live update was released for the PLAYSTATION 3 in March, making the PLAYSTATION 3 the first BD-Live (Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0) compatible player. Just this week, the first BD-Live compatible Blu-ray movies were released: The 6th Day and Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

BD-Live allows web updates/downloads via your online PLAYSTATION 3. Features such as exclusive content ("refreshed previews and exclusive special features") will be available from the Blu-ray disc's BD-Live Menu. Some other possible features include "ringtone/wallpaper downloads, peer to peer interactions, live events and gaming activities."

Here's a look at The 6th Day Blu-ray disc's BD-Live functionality and what's included. The first thing you'll be asked upon playing the Blu-ray, via the PLAYSTATION 3 interface, is "Do you want to allow Internet connection from BDs?" This option can always be edited later from the [Settings], [BD/DVD Settings], [BD Internet Connection] menu.

See the screenshots with descriptions of the features below.

See more information on BD-Live here.

UPDATE 4/11/08: EngadgetHD has details on the Walk Hard BD-Live features. See more here.

The home menu of BD-Live. There's currently six Blu-ray disc movie trailers (available in both standard definition and high definition) and three theatrical previews (SD, HD as well). The trailers are only accessible from this BD-Live interface, via the Blu-ray disc.

Access the BD-Live menu by going to "Special Features." Prepare for a few seconds delay in loading the first time you launch it. Oddly, an audio icon appears in the top left.

Image
The BD-Live menu on the left currently consists of "What's New," "FAQ," and "Return To Disc Menu" options. The FAQ can be seen here as well.

Image
You can select to download multiple trailers at once. After you select the SD or HD version, a little progress bar appears under the title you selected, along with an "X" to abort the transfer. Selecting more than one slowed things down significantly.

This is the movie file that showed up for the Gattaca HD trailer downloaded (at XMB menu). It's not with the other trailers in PLAYSTATION 3's "Video" menu. It's in the "BD Data Utility," "Shared Cache Data" folder. You won't be able to play it from the PLAYSTATION 3's XMB menu. It can only be accessed from the BD-Live menu on the Blu-ray disc.

Once the download for the trailer has completed, the icon changes from a "download" arrow to a blue colored button with a "play" arrow.

There's no "BD Live" logo or mention on the cover or on the back of the box. Maybe it's not "prime time" yet? Let me know if I missed something on the box! (nope, not even on the shrink wrap of the box)

I thought that BD-Live tag was on the shrink wrap?
