A recently released Unreal Tournament III Xbox 360 trailer from Epic Games has stirred up some controversy. Particularly within the Unreal Tournament III mod community. Within a brief second of the video (0:47-0:48), a gameplay segment is shown on an icy barge. It's a very different looking environment from UT3 maps typically created on land. A mod creator by the name of "EpicJon" on the Epic Forums had created a similar looking map called "DM-ArcticShipment," actually inspired by a Call of Duty 4 map. EpicJon was soon notified of the trailer video. It didn't take long for a posting to show up on NeoGAF, stating that EpicJon had "posted about his discontent in the Epic Forums" and that "he got banned and his thread deleted."
A bit of mudslinging ensued over on the NeoGAF and Epic Forums, but Mark Rein, VP of Epic Games, soon stepped in to clear things up. EpicJon was soon un-banned and threads were restored, while Mark Rein promised a further look into the matter. "I've asked our guys to look into this. As I said in my email to you I assure you that Epic is not the kind of company that would knowingly steal somebody's work," Mark Rein continued, "...we've actually gone out and paid folks to license their maps when we've included them in one of our bonus packs or within one of our games." A response from Epic Games is expected within the next couple of days. In the meantime, PLAYSTATION 3 gamers can download EpicJon's DM-ArcticShipment_Night mod here and check it out firsthand.
