Grand Theft Auto IV: Xbox 360 vs. PLAYSTATION 3 Roundup PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexis Morgenstern

If you own both an Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3, you're probably wondering what the pros and cons of Grand Theft Auto IV are for each system. It's surely to be much discussed amongst the midnight campers. With the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV only days away, it's decision time. Are you platform faithful? Install times or hard drive size an issue? Do you want downloadable content? Prefer one controller over another? Online multiplayer preferences? Everyone has their own reasons for choosing what system to play on, but hopefully some of these articles from around the web will help you weigh in which gaming dimension you'll playing Liberty City in. One tip: avoid the "fanboy" rationale.

Here's a roundup of various Grand Theft Auto IV articles that have showed up within the last couple of days:

From IGN: "Grand Theft Auto IV Review: This is the American dream."
From Planet Grand Theft Auto: "PS3 or Xbox 360?"
From GameDaily: "Eight Reasons You'll Play GTA IV on PS3"
From WhatIfGaming: "GTA IV: PS3 Or 360? -Judge With Truthful Evidence"
From Next Generation: "Pachter: PS3 to Win the GTA IV War"
From Canada.com Games & Reviews: "Gritty GTA4 may help Sony wrest turf from Microsoft"
From Xbox.com: "Looking Forward to Liberty City"
From The Sixth Axis: "GTA IV - PS3 Superiority"

As for me, I have my own reasons for going with the platform I selected. Those of you on my Xbox LIVE and PSN friends list, see where I show up on April 30th.

Let us know what platform you are going with if you have both Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 systems with your comment below. Also, if you find any other comparisons, reviews, or predictions on Grand Theft Auto IV add the links in the comments below!

UPDATE 4/28/08: See a review roundup of Grand Theft Auto IV here.

I own Xbox so it is obvious. However, I bought the Xbox for its windows media center, which is a lot more powerful than any single game!

I would love my 360 more due to the great games for it, but the hardware just sucks! Also it is nice to play online for free.

Why the hell did MS even put the unfinished 360 hardware in the market? Yeah, they got my sale first, but they lost a lifetime customer. It will take a long time before I trust MS hardware again!

You cant treat hardware as something "patchable" like software. Buy a system from a hardware manuacturer like Sony. MS just doesn't get hardware design apparently.

Reliability in every game console since the NES, and then 360 has to screw it all up!

my 360 wont live to see the downladable content after playing GTA4, so no point in going for downloadable content, players are customed to dual shock since the GTA vice city so no xbox controller for me, XBL or PSN i go with the one who has less lags i oh i think its PSN, and GTA4 will sell more copie of GTA4 on ps3 so i think i will meet more people on PSN...done and dusted PS3 GTA4 bundle i am coming
Not same price stupid
Written by Guest on 2008-04-28 15:48:21
Xbox costs more and the DLC will cost money too, Same Price? No it isn't.

People who like the xbox more aren't the problem, its the idiots who have to go around lying about it, or just proving how ignorant they are. The only thing xbox has over ps3 is that it comes with a headset, making it easier to talk to people.

BTW DLC isn't exclusive to xbox like idiots try to make it sound, microsoft spent $50 million for some dlc for xbox, PS3 could end up with much more DLC for all we know, sony just isn't using that as a way to rip people off.

It will be interesting to see how many loyal xbox fans end up with a dead peice of s$%t system and a burning desire to play gta4 this week.

Be loyal to the game not the console manufacturer. Whoever provides the best gaming experiences should be the winner and right now the Xbox 360 is that choice because of LIVE and the DLC. True gamers would get this as they would want the most content for the same price. Common sense.

Give the DLC, rumle on standard controller, better online service and better anolog controls, 360 for me!

Ill be buying it on PS3
Better graphics, Better controller, Quiet system, faster load times. If I bought it for 360 I still wouldnt bother with the episodic content. Who cares

Yes I will be playing it on my ps3! I WILL feel the bullets penetrate my chest (with my duel shock 3) as I take the fuzz head on. I guess the delay (ps3's fault)will be worth it because it seems that the ps3 version is superior to 360 in visuals and loatimes. "SOLD!.....PS3!" I guess the 9$/month for xbox live over the course of the next nine months will make that extra dload/content worth it???.....wha? I probably seem bitter but my 3rd 360 rrod'd me after a 5 hour session of crackdown so I can only imagine that extended play on GTA4 will be roulette on my replacement box. again "SOLD....PS3!"

Gta 4 will be slightly better on ps3 (load times and pop-in) due to the mandatory install. maybe not much but enough for me! also i don't trust my 360 with long gaming sessions as its been back twice since launch.

I have nothing against either console but i don't like PSN and i can't believe anyone who has both and actually plays a game right through to the end would not want the version with DLC.
360 version for me, can't wait till tuesday!!!

I don't have a PS3 and still consider getting one. But since I already have the 360, the PS3 presents no REAL advantage at the moment. That will probably change in the future but for now me and the other 19M users will will be getting GTAIV on 360.

DLC won't be here til 2k9...rockstar says it's still just a concept "in their heads"...I'm sure it'll be good, but if it's that good I'll get the xbox goty edition that contains the dlc when the time comes...the graphics are better on the PS3 version...no one, including Rockstar, says otherwise and I personally prefer the look on that system to the more color-saturated but cartoonish look on xbox...xbl is full of kiddie d-bags I don't care for...PSN has them of course, but luckily less of them, or at least I don't have to hear as many of them...so if they're all on XBL, then thank my personal GAWD, I hope they stay there....and while the interface is good on xbl, my experience on PSN has been solid....as far as the guy who said no vibration you're wrong...DualShock 3 has been out for weeks with full vibration - don't spread uninformed mistruths....more devs are getting the hang of developing on PS3 now...Rockstar said it took a while but now they have no problems and there's a lot more scalability on that system due to the disc size and h/w...that's why it's been confirmed there's more cars and pedestrians on the ps3 version as well as less pop-in, framerate chug, aliasing, etc...believe me, I was on board with xbox360 from day one and understand people's devotion to it, but this is the first game I'm going the other way on...NCAAF and Madden are the next ones...guaranteed 60 FPS this year, finally. Bottom line: no one will be unhappy b/c the game is rock solid on both systems...but the x360 "no brainer" comments are off-base. It only is a no-brainer if you don't own both systems and/or the majority of your friends will be on xbl, which is a legitimate reason for sure. But don't rip PSN b/c it's actually very good (I don't care that it's free as much as others do, but I will say that I've played PLENTY of games on XBL that were plenty laggy, esp b4 patching and for all the talk of it's greatness and "you get what you pay for" I'll say as an owner of both systems that MSFT has given me what I paid for up until now but that it's not really much better for what they charge.
to the guy who said 20 extra hours, etc
Written by SHA.UL on 2008-04-26 19:49:31
how do you know if its the only system with custom soundtrack?
im sure you can do the same on ps3 as ive done with other ps3 games.

i got both systems, but im gettin it on ps3, just in case i get RROD plus i like the controller better. and if i dont buy games for ps3 then ill be like all the other geniuses who blab about their ps3 being a 400 dollar dead weight. my 2 cents.

Not only because I own one but because the episodic content and other online features will be more enjoyable on Xbox Live. The only thing that sucks about PS3 to me is that I don't have one yet. Notice I said "yet".

You get more for your money on the 360. PS3 held up release of this game because it's so hard to write code on.

Sixaxis and a more feature filled console. Plus the average lifespan of their consoles, ps3 will probably outlive the next xbox (ps3 is actually cheaper too, if you pay for live you pay more).
i have both systems......
Written by Guest on 2008-04-26 10:52:13
i really like the ps3 hardware,it's quiet, solid, reliable, yet without hesitation i am getting the 360 version. mind you i've gone through 5 units, but donloadable content, my friends list, multiplayer on live, achievemnts and software tends to run better on 360 still make it a no brainer.
