It's the third week of Nintendo's WiiWare releases and my Wii's storage capacity for another WiiWare game has already been capped. In fact, there's only one WiiWare game I currently have: Lost Winds. There's a whole screen and a half of empty Wii Channel slots, but upon trying to purchase my second WiiWare game, I was told (via the Wii Shop) to free up more space. There's currently no external storage solution for the Wii. My Wii system memory needs some slimming. Yours could too, most likely. Especially if you are digging the new WiiWare games and have already downloaded a few Virtual Console games.
So after some poking around in the Wii Data Management menu, here's some tips for making room on your Wii for WiiWare and Virtual Console games until Nintendo (hopefully) offers another data storage solution: - Get an SD Card. 1GB or 2GB SD cards are cheap. You don't need to get those white "Wii" branded SanDisk ones either. A non-branded SanDisk SD card will get the same job done, at a cheaper price. SD Cards can store some save data (not all) and backup your Virtual Console and/or WiiWare games. - Even if you don't have an SD card, Virtual Console and WiiWare games can be re-downloaded any time. Wii system memory is basically consumed from Save Data and Channels.
Save Data: You can move some save data to the SD card, but not all game save data. Depends on the game. When copying save data to the SD card, you may get a notification that some, but not all, save data was copied. Proceed with caution when moving save data and erasing. This won't be the place where you can scrounge up the most free space. If you're as cautious with game save data like me, you won't move and/or erase save data that you've invested hours in. Get rid of data from games you no longer have, you've already completed, or have rented/borrowed.
Wii Channels Data: Wii Channels are separate from game save data. This is where you'll most likely free up the majority of space from your Wii system memory. Wii Channels take the most space. -Don't install game channels from Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit. Although they may provide quicker access to some of the game features, they take up system memory. They aren't required either. - Remove demo Wii Channel data (like that Metroid Prime 3 Channel preview if you downloaded it). - Remove some channels you haven't been using such as "Everybody Votes" or "Check Mii Out" Channels. You can also download those again. - Start chipping away at some of your Virtual Console games you don't play as much. Remember, you can either back them up on an SD card or download them again from the Wii Shop, at no charge (since you already purchased it). Just copy them back to the Wii System memory to have access to play them again. - When you copy a Wii Channel to your SD card and then erase it from your Wii system memory space, you will not be able to play it from the SD card. Basically, it won't show up in the Wii Channel menu. The SD card only serves as a temporary backup place. To use any Channel, it must be on the Wii system memory. Take a look at your "Blocks Open" number in the lower right of the Wii Save Data and Channels screens. If you couldn't download something earlier, this is the number you are looking to increase. Nintendo has a few tips on managing your Wii internal system memory as well. See the tips on managing the Wii's system memory here on Nintendo's website. GamesRadar recently reported that Nintendo is thinking about offering a storage solution soon. Infendo has also relayed a message from Nintendo on the space limitation. Hopefully Nintendo acts on it soon, as WiiWare games will quickly consume Wii storage space and we won't be able to buy any more WiiWare games, right? Let Nintendo know your storage concerns here.
