Rumors that an upcoming PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update will include in-game XMB, custom soundtracks and Trophies have risen once again. There are various reports that those features will be included in the next coming update (2.4), but the latest rumor says that these are only developer features. Meaning, we won't see them in the next firmware update (2.4).
The latest word, via videogaming247, is that developers will be able to add the Trophies feature (the PLAYSTATION 3's "Achievement" equivalent), but that doesn't mean it will be available in update 2.4. It's also rumored that the in-game XMB may not be fully compatible with all PLAYSTATION 3 games. As for the custom soundtracks, rumor is that it may be applied only if the developer releases a game patch (as done for some games when the DUALSHOCK 3 rumble support happened). According to Gaming Age, the 2.4 firmware update is rumored to be coming sometime in June 2008. So there you have it, a lot of rumors with the only current fact being that the most current firmware release is 2.35, released two weeks ago. Watch the PLAYSTATION 3 System Update page for latest firmware details as well.
