Word in the realm of our prestigious video game community is an ear-tickler for PLAYSTATION 3 40GB owners. According to German website InPlaystation, via N4G.com, a future firmware update may allow current PS3 40GB owners to finally have the backwards compatibility feature. There does seem to be a snag in this whole celebration amongst 40 GB owners: the update appears to be a PS2 emulator limited to future PS2 game downloads by way of the PlayStation Network. There are several Pros and Cons to Sony "possible" methods, so let's name a few.

The Pros:

• Finally 40 GB owners can play PS2 games on their PS3.
• With the "download-only" method as the only way to play the PS2 titles, it assists us by eliminating clutter (game boxes) at home.
• Sony will be able to re-cash in on PS2 purchases made by owners, re-purchasing their favorites.

The Cons:

• Sony will be able to re-cash in on PS2 purchases made by owners.
• Not being able to play actual PS2 discs that a gamer may already own.
• The limited games made available for download may be lackluster á la Virtual Console.

The firmware update which may (or may not) include this magnificent and much needed function, should be available in October 2008.
