The iPhone is ready to move mobile gaming. Today Apple announced details on the new iPhone 3G, available with 8GB or 16GB capacity. There's plenty of features offered by the upcoming iPhone 3G, but we're most interested in what it means to gaming, right?
Apple's iPhone 3G comes at an entry price of $199 for the 8GB model, putting it not too far off the $169.99 price tag of the Sony PSP and $70 more than the Nintendo DS. Games on the iPhone will not only support touch-based gameplay found on the Nintendo DS, but also motion controlled gameplay using the accelerometer. One of the first games to demonstrate the iPhone's motion controlled gameplay is SEGA's Super Monkey Ball (see video sample below). As Apple describes it: "Finally, a mobile game console that responds to your movements. Now iPhone gives you tap-and-tilt games like Super Monkey Ball." Super Monkey Ball will be available from the iPhone's App Store for $9.99, at the launch of the App Store (July 2008). Development time seems to be quick, as Touch Arcade noted an early build was completed "in just two weeks." Kroll, an action-adventure game, was another iPhone game demoed at today's Apple WWDC keynote. Kroll is coming from developer Digital Legends, estimated for a September 2008 release. It looks like the iPhone 3G has the potential to be a worthy contender in the mobile gaming market. We can't wait to see what game developers bring (and don't forget, BioShock!). The iPhone 3G will be available July 11, 2008. Check out more on the iPhone 3G here at Apple.com. See more on TouchArcade.com.
