NPD Group's May 2008 videogame sales numbers are in, with the top of the charts still dominated by Nintendo. On the hardware front, the PLAYSTATION 3 just inched above the Xbox 360. GTA IV effect? Nintendo still sits happily on the top with its Wii and DS systems.

On the games front, GTA IV (Xbox 360 version) sits in the #1 spot, but Nintendo's Wii games packaged with hardware take spots #2 and #3. “The Wii Wheel and Wii Balance Board accessories make game play fun for new gamers while presenting new challenges for those who have been playing a long time,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

May 2008 videogame hardware sales (in units):
1. Wii: 675.1K
2. Nintendo DS: 452.6K
3. PLAYSTATION 3: 208.7K
4 . Xbox 360: 186.6K
5. Sony PlayStation Portable: 182.3K
(PS2 numbers were not provided)

May 2008 videogame software sales (in units):
1. Grand Theft Auto IV - Xbox 360 – Take-Two – 871.3K
2. Mario Kart Wii (w/ wheel) – Wii – Nintendo – 787.4K
3. Wii Fit (w/ Balance Board) – Wii – Nintendo – 687.7K
4. Grand Theft Auto IV - PS3 – Take-Two – 442.9K
5. Wii Play (w/ remote) – Wii – Nintendo – 294.6K
6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii – Nintendo – 171.1K
7. Iron Man - PS2 – Sega – 130.6K
8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Wii – Activision – 116.8K
9. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness - DS – Nintendo – 107K
10. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time - DS – Nintendo – 102K

Forseeing into June 2008... Metal Gear Solid 4 and Ninja Gaiden II will definitely be shaking the list up. PLAYSTATION 3 hardware will likely move even more thanks to MGS 4 bundles. The God of War PSP Bundle and Metallic Silver Guitar Hero DS will also continue to push handheld hardware.
