Deep into the Metal Gear Solid saga with Metal Gear Solid 4, you probably have more questions than you'll have answers. If this is your first MGS game, you're probably overwhelmed with all the characters and their history. After years in between some Metal Gear games, I can use a refresher myself. Although there are plenty of ways you can catch up (Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinee, Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 DVD, Metal Gear Solid Graphic Novels, and Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection), no information on Metal Gear Solid will be easier to obtain than from a newly announced downloadable application, coming to the PLAYSTATION Store tomorrow.
From the PlayStation Blog: "The MGS4 Database is a free, downloadable interactive application that contains the official knowledge base of everything that is Metal Gear, reaching all the way back to the very beginning of the franchise. Including complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and much more! The MGS4 database is a great way to catch up for someone new to Metal Gear, as well as a useful resource for any veteran of the series, with complete official details on every aspect of the intricate Metal gear lore." Can't wait to dig in. The neat part about it is if you're worried about spoilers on some stuff in Metal Gear Solid 4, that information will be blacked out until you finish the game. As another nice bonus, the first piece of downloadable content is already available for MGS4 from the EXTRAS menu: the "Conclusion" in-game iPod music track and the Digital Red OctoCamo suit.
UPDATE: If you have a Japanese PSN PS3 account setup, you can already download the MGS Database Application and read it in English. The game will check your MGS 4 data save file (to help avoid spoilers), Games covered in the MGS Database include: From the PlayStation Blog
