Following the early morning news of in-game XMB and Trophy Support on the PLAYSTATION 3, it's time to put questions to rest, thanks to the PlayStation Blog's Firmware 2.40 FAQ.

A summary of some of the key points that the FAQ has cleared up:

In-game XMB:
- You won't be able to use the web browser via in-game XMB.
- Text messaging will be the main form of communication (no voice messages).
- In-game XMB is only accessible from PS3 games (not PS2 games, DVDs or Blu-rays)
- Some system settings cannot be changed via the in-game XMB.
- The PlayStation Store is not accessible from the in-game XMB.
- Custom soundtracks available if developer makes it so.
- Cross game invites are not supported.

Trophies:
- Trophies may not be mandatory, but Sony is working on developer support.
- Trophies are tied to PSN ID, not to save files on hard drive.
- Trophies are not retroactive (meaning, you'll have to replay your previous PS3 games to get Trophies).
- Trophy stats are not viewable via web browser.
- Game packaging mentioning trophy support still being determined.
- Unlock a Trophy and you'll get a sound effect [UPDATED 7/1/08]

Several of those are undoubtedly comparison to the Xbox 360's achievement and Dashboard features. The PSN profile also bears similarities to the Xbox 360's gamercard. So Firmware 2.40 is one small step towards an improved online and gaming experience, but it also shows there is still a way to go in comparison to the Xbox 360's Dashboard, Achievements and Gamercard.

PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.40 will be coming this week, on July 2nd. See earlier information on it here and here.
