Sony has not been shy about changing the configuration of its latest batch of consoles, and that trend continues. Sony has decided to make the 80GB Playstation the only choice in its home console line-up, phasing out the 40GB model. The catch is however, that this isn't your standard 80GB Playstation 3. Sony itself states: "....will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage to accommodate more movies, graphics, music, photos and other entertainment content – all for the same price. As with its predecessor, the new 80GB model will be a complete entertainment system comprising of a Blu-ray™ player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, Cell Broadband Engine™ and a built-in 80GB hard-disk drive." This seems to mean that Playstation 2 game support is on its way out as will be 2 USB plugs and the memory card reader functionality (Sony cleverly leaves these things out without explicitly stating that they will be removed). Here's hoping I'm wrong as I love Metal Gear Solid 2 and I'm sure I can trade up to an 80gb at a game store someday. You can expect this change to take place this September, at a $399 price point.
