LIVE Service Now Free... For PC Gamers PDF Print E-mail

It almost was REALLY exciting news, but it will be great news for some. Microsoft's LIVE service has gone free for Games For Windows. That's for PC gamers, not for Xbox 360 LIVE members. It did stir up some confusion and controversy when it was first announced just over a year ago (March 2007) by Microsoft. Why would PC gamers need to pay for multiplayer/online experiences? The good news now is that multiplayer and cross-platform Xbox 360 gameplay is now free, including the "network optimized" gameplay. If you already had an Xbox 360 LIVE account, it also applied to the Games For Windows LIVE.

Previous features of Games For Windows LIVE service:
SILVER:
• Single gamertag
• Common gamer profile
• Common gamerscore
• Single player achievements
• Private chat via text and voice
• Common friends list and online presence
• PC only multiplayer including browsing a list of active PC games

GOLD (paying members, $49.95 per year):
• Multiplayer matchmaking with friends
• TrueSkill™ matchmaking
• Multiplayer achievements
• Cross-platform gameplay

A Marketplace for Games for Windows LIVE will also be coming for PC gamers, so additional game content, demos, trailers and more can be downloaded from there. See more about Games For Windows LIVE here.
